Sorry did not see you M8 - lew600fazer - 19-02-15 I nearly commited the cardinal sin today. I have just bought myself a new Renault Captur and the roof pillars are quite thick. I was pulling out of a side road and yes you have guessed it. Thankfully I hit the brakes and he stopped. No harm done but a strong smell of the merde coming from me. I got out and had a word with the guy , like me past his sell by date. He was a german lad and was okay about it, he was on a BMW thingy. He was a dam sight cooler about it than me. When I told him I was a biker myself he said not to beat myself up about it. I cannot believe I forgot the golden rule ,look once look twice, think bike. I am ashamed of myself. :eek Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - darrsi - 19-02-15 Had to be a BMW involved. :lol Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - bigralphie - 19-02-15 Biker in his car reversed into me last year knocking me off (nearly 3 grand of damage of a 10 mph impact :eek ) The guy was mortified and after my initial "foc sake mate" moment I started to feel sorry for him he looked so ashamed lol He was as good as gold too , his insurance company rang me the next day admitting liability which if he was an arse he could of made out I run into him as no one else stopped I stuck the bike (which was still under its 2 year warranty) into the dealer that supplied it to make sure all repairs were original parts but I didn't claim for injuries as it was just cuts and bruising and no damage to my leathers as I thought his premium would jump enough without adding to his woe :'( shit happens :rolleyes Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - HarryHornby - 19-02-15 I've not come that close but there have been a couple of times where I've pulled out (no, not that kind of pulled out) and thought FOC, I didn't double check. As a biker you are right, I felt gutted I hadn't checked.......... Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - Dave48 - 21-02-15 A timely warning to all of us whether riding or cageing. I discovered the problem driving Merc Sprinters which, like quite a few cars/vans, have thick front door pillars. So, unless you are positioned at right angle to junction, lateral vision can be severely limited. As bikers its one more reason to assume nothing about other road users intentions. Another "favourite" is where bikes position themselves behind cars where they are invisible between view from rear view mirror & door mirrors. :eek Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - darrsi - 21-02-15 Had a van try and cross blatant one metre wide painted chevrons into my path on a roundabout yesterday. The air horn did overtime, yet he still kept swerving in and out as if i was just going to disappear? Gave him some of my best hand signals after he eventually crossed over over me when i had no choice but to back off, and he had the audacity to look at me completely puzzled wondering why i was so pissed off? Prick. :grumble Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - fazersharp - 21-02-15 Restricted views is one of my bug bears against the evil sat navs. Is there no limit to the size of these things, when in a small car they seem almost to cover 1/4 of the screen - add that to a stupid dangly thing from the mirror its a wonder they can see a car let alone a bike Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - red98 - 21-02-15 (21-02-15, 12:42 PM)fazersharp link Wrote:Restricted views is one of my bug bears against the evil sat navs. Is there no limit to the size of these things, when in a small car they seem almost to cover 1/4 of the screen - add that to a stupid dangly thing from the mirror its a wonder they can see a car let alone a bike +1 fazersharp...........sat nav, mobile, dangly thing and even rear view mirror, all blocking forward vision, can easily loose a pedestrian, cyclists or biker behind all that crap...why mount them on the screen , dash mount is the place for those who dont know how to us a map... :rolleyes....least we've got rid of the tax disc now....... Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - fazersharp - 21-02-15 What gets me is a few years ago when portable mini dvd players came out it was illegal to fit them in the front half of the cabin, how on earth have sat navs managed to creep in and go unrestricted as to where they fit. If I had a chip within my view on my window screen its an MOT fail because its in my view how come then its ok to stick a sat nav in front of your face. I wonder in any accident do the police look into where the sat nav was positioned. Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - fazersharp - 21-02-15 How about this then to solve the pillar problem http://www.autoblog.com/2014/12/15/jaguar-land-rover-360-virtual-urban-windscreen-transparent-pillar-follow-me-ghost-car-navigation-systems-video-official/#image-1 Sh1t thats a big link ! Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - Dead Eye - 21-02-15 Interesting tech, I look forward to seeing how the world of Holographics and Augmented Reality (AR) develops over the next decade or so ![]() Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - darrsi - 21-02-15 I found myself staring at the hologram and not paying attention elsewhere! Not good. Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - slappy - 21-02-15 (21-02-15, 05:37 PM)darrsi link Wrote:I found myself staring at the hologram and not paying attention elsewhere! So did I! I think drivers would be too distracted by the images and the ghost car people would just follow and not pay any attention to anything else on the road. Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - HarryHornby - 21-02-15 That's a really good point about the chip on the screen being a failure but sat navs are getting bigger.... Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - fireblake - 22-02-15 I drive a DAF(t) lorry and the blind spots are horrendous. Focing great mirrors add to it. When coming to junctions my head is all over the place trying to see around them. Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - lew600fazer - 22-02-15 Got into my mates car last year for a run down the town, says to him feck this we will go in mine. Why whats up. He had two big pink furry Dice hanging from the mirror. :rolleyes Re: Sorry did not see you M8 - taylor - 22-02-15 you should have taken pics lew, for valentines day.
