Wiring in a Satnav. - Grayo - 30-01-15

Anybody help with how I should wire in a Satnav to my FZ1 ?  I've got a Garmin Zumo 390LM and ideally I would like it to be switched on and off with the ignition. All advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Grayo.

Mine is wired straight to battery.  Make sure it's fused and u will be fine as it won't draw power unless u leave the satnav in the mount.

Ok, thanks.

I wired in a cigarette lighter socket as per Pat's site: http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/cigarettelightersocketinstallation.html which I mounted (facing down) to the coolent filler bracket under the right hand side dash fairing. It is on a relay with the sidelights so is powered with the ignition and is completely out of sight unless you go looking for it, but falls easily to hand when you know it is there.

Hi, my garmin is wired upto my rear light (+) with a in-line fuse & earthed to a nearby frame screw using a "scotch block" for the live feed from the rear light. I used a car type cigarette lighter socket hid in the space in the fairing at side of the rear seat. I ran the mini USB cable under the tank & upto the yolks where my Satnav mount is. The cigarette socket has now been replaced by a garmin voltage converter as the Slovakian bad weather got into the lighter socket & blew the plug.

I use one of these http://shop.buybits.com/2-5mm-dc-direct-to-battery-hardwire-power-charger-for-tigra-bikeconsole-power-enabled-cases-mounts-sku-16774.html

You can wire an automotive relay in and mount it on the rear sub frame in the seat shroud just wire the switced terminal to the licence plate light

Re: Wiring in a Satnav. - bigralphie - 05-03-15

The new Garmins have a fused auto sensing voltage step down converter built into the power cable
you can go straight to battery or take a live from a more convenient point (lights etc)..
relay always a good shout

Relay sounds like the best idea. Anybody know how I wire it to a relay ?

Re: Wiring in a Satnav. - davey boy - 08-03-15

I bought an automotive relay from ebay and you basically wire it through the relay to the battery and earth the relay then splice a wire into a switched circuit (i used the numberplate light) and connect this to the relay there are 3 or 4 tabs on a relay depending on the one you buy here is alink that might help http://www.mp3car.com/the-faq-emporium/117895-faq-relays-how-they-work-and-how-to-wire-it-up.html

That's a great help. Thanks for that.

That is all covered in the link to Pat's site that I posted earlier. Did you look at it?

No but have now , I have then Zumo 350lm and just wired to the battery but if I add anything else I think I fit a fuzebox

Re: Wiring in a Satnav. - Fazafou - 10-03-15

Tidy little unit but 70 quid is shocking. Could wire something similar for under a tenner.

Re: Wiring in a Satnav. - davey boy - 10-03-15

Inline fuze holder, an automotive relay a bit of wire all for under a fiver

Re: Wiring in a Satnav. - fazer69 - 19-03-15

Fitting a Zumo 660, straight off the battery using my optimate lead, plug it in when using, job done.

Re: Wiring in a Satnav. - davey boy - 21-03-15

Good idea I am running out of space on my battery terminals

Re: Wiring in a Satnav. - Peasy - 21-03-15

I've got one of these to run off the battery that simply unplugs when not in use. I'll only use the nav a couple of times a year so thought this was a good quick idea.
