FZ6 S2 Ignition Barrel Service / Donor parts - WhiteZer - 30-01-15

OK, this spring I'm going to try and sort my ignition barrel.  It's got the usual symptoms of it needing a wiggle to work and the key not staying locked in place once the ignition is switched on.

I've spoken to a few locksmiths and found one locally who says they can service my old barrel and replace the worn parts with those from a donor barrel.

My question is:  Has anyone done this and can I get away with a new cheap Chinese barrel from the bay for donor parts?

I don't really want to splash out on a second hand Yamaha barrel and find it has the same issue, if I can help it.

Yamaha say they can help, but I'll need the whole new setup (all locks, ECU, etc) for which they want around £800.00.

Thanks for any info you can give.

have you tried some light oil? maybe get it working a bit, mine is getting a bit worn but a drop of maintainance oil helps?

Yup.  Have tried some oil.  No change.

Think I'll get the barrel off and get it checked out and go from there.

I read on a Suzuki forum a while ago about overhauling a "wiggly" key:  One guy had a fix which he said was reverse all the years of people filling their lock barrels with WD-40.

I had a go on my GSXR Slingshot and flushed the lock with contact cleaner (although he did say brake cleaner) work it a bit and repeat until the output runs clean.  Then, get some graphite lock lube from Screwfix, and fill the lock, work it in and hey presto.  Worked for me.

Bottom line is don't use WD-40 as it flushes out the grease!
