carb rubbers - scoobie_paws - 24-01-15
hey all
are the carb rubbers for the box and fox eye the same size? mine are cracking on the boxeye and seen some on fleabay but doesn't say which they are from

I could be proved wrong here but people who have had cracked rubbers - incl me although they are cracked the crack is not all the way through with no performance issues.
A repair is black silicone and or self amalgamating tape

Silicone does a good job and can take the heat.
If you take your time when smoothing it out, ideally with a wet finger (have the wife stand near when effecting repair) then you can get a really god finish.

I know mine are covered in cracks on the outside but when I took carbs off about 5 years ago to clean heater tube out none of the cracks were the whole way through so just left them.

jules can you confirm for me my theory -- its a theory because i canot see with them fitted, but it it just the outside ones cracked and nowhere else due to sun/ uv damage

Just had a look at mine and the inner ones look as bad as the outer ones but then Scotland doesn't have the highest UV levels in the world!
The rubber seems even harder than I remember I think I could knock some solid chunks off the lip by the jubilee clip if I wanted to. Engine heat and exposure to the air and various cleaning products/degreasers also causing deterioration?
Are the rubbers the same material the whole way through or is there an inner liner that's resistant to petrol and the cracked rubber on the outside?

If there's no noticeable running issues then theres no problem, when it's running spray wd40 over the inlet rubbers individually and listen for any difference in engine revs!

They have to be quite badly perished to allow air to be sucked in. I spray them with carb cleaner, if the revs rise then they are fucked. I do sell alot of 2nd hand sets for £40 but then I also sell brand new pattern parts for only £87
