New to Forum, New Licence - Shelly - 10-12-14

Hi All,

Been around bikes all my life, passed my Mod 2 last week so on the hunt for a bike.  I do like the fazer but am after some help I'm hoping someone here may be able to answer.  I struggled to learn on one as I have nerve damage in my neck meaning I can't put alot of weight on my arms for any period of time (ended up doing tests on a trans alp)  but I don't want an enduro.

Would anyone know if you can buy a kit that just lowers the pegs?
The actual ride height of the bike was fine , but I have quite long legs (especially for a burd) and for me to get my feet comfy on the pegs as standard I had to slide back to the rear of the seat which put more weight on my arms .....
Does my question make sense??? Hope someone can help as I'd like to have a wee fazer sat in the shed for next season

Shelly

Hey Shelley, firstly welcome to the forum and well done on passing the Mod2. Obviously the usual shpeel that now the learning begins..bla bla

& it sounds like you are talking about the original fazer, the little FZS600 which is a great bike. Something must be drawing you to it to even ask the question.

You say that you've been around bikes a long time but have you been riding them long? As you become more proficient and relaxed on the roads then you will begin to put a lighter touch on the bars as when starting off it is all to easy to wrestle the bars and to get tense and then get the stiff neck. Obviously you wouldnt want a sporty bike that was tipping you forward but with time on any bike your neck will get less strain as you become more relaxed........proper countersteering and a light grip on the bars as if holding a bird without crushing it........easier said than done mind sometimes.

You can get jack up kits (2 metal bars called dog bones) cheaply which raise the rear a bit and it does make the general riding position ,more comfy i think but at the same time it might tip you forward which you dont want.

There must be something out there that could lower the pegs but i wouldnt want them any lower for the corners as youll end up digging holes in the road with the pegs........someone on here was talking about cheap kits for sports bikes that lower the pegs but i havent heard of anyone getting it for the FZS600.

Some different bars like Renthal handlebars could help.....as could handlebar risers which are cheap.

No doubt someone else will be along to help more.

Bes of luck. 8)

Hi shelly.....as noggy, welcome to the forum, how about extra foam in the seat, raise the bars at the same time......a standard 600 does tip you forward at bit putting weight on your wrists......

Re: New to Forum, New Licence - Shelly - 10-12-14

Thanks gents,

As the actual ride height was ok I was thinking to leave the actual bike height alone.  I didn't think about the pegs and cornering.

I haven't ridden much other than lessons this year (rode way back when I took my first CBT in my teens but we won't try and remember that far back, plus I was fit and healthy then lol)

I can understand what your saying about getting used to the bike, if that may play a factor who knows ....

The hunt goes on

I've just fitted a set of Vario 30mm adjustable footpegs (from M&P on ebay - £89.99) to my fazer and found they help with my knees quite a lot. I reckon they and a set of risers will help you out.  Smile

The Fazer 6 has lowish ground clearance... Bar risers?

Hello Shelly, sounds like red i on tghe right track as your lucky enough to have long legs, some extra foam and bar risers sounds like the future . I hope you find what your looking for.

Hi shelly, take a look on this website, it just might help out if you have to get a certain stance on a bike.

Bearing in mind that the Fazer is a relaxed position, start experimenting with it and see what you think.

Having done a few hundred miles commuting now I can say they're a bag of shite and I've wasted my money.
Yes the 30mm drop makes my knees more comfy, but there are other things wrong now.
On the left side, the 8 position adjusting bracket produces too much sideways offset, meaning I have to really twist my foot inwards for my toe to reach the gear lever, so much so that I now rest my foot on the peg hinge while changing up and only use the peg itself when cruising.
On the right side, the brake pedal is much bigger so the offset isn't an issue. However, there's no adjustment in the pedal, so when I fitted the footpeg with a 30mm drop it effectively raised the pedal. I now have to lift my foot off the peg to use the rear brake and risk locking the back wheel up.
Gonna have to refit some standard pegs pretty soon.  :rolleyes

Re: New to Forum, New Licence - Millietant - 03-01-15

Hi Shelly and welcome to the forum.

Did you try to learn on the pre-2004 Fazer 600, or on the Post-2004 FZ 6 Fazer ?  They're different bikes.

either way, if it's the foods position that's an issue, I'd suggest you find a good local engineering firm (with a lean towards bikes), I'm sure it can be done for a reasonable cost (try some of the people who advertise in Classic and Motorcycle Mechanics magazine.

A friend of mine who had only one leg got a peg kit make 20 years ago which helped him ride and control his bike again (even though his XS1100 had a sidecar attached).

Hopefully you get sorted and get out on the road properly soon.
