[Technical] Steering feeling very light [Solved] - helloindustries - 06-11-14

Solved.
Had it looked at. It was a loose bearing.

Ahoy.

Over the last week or so, my steering has felt way too light.
I've checked the tyre pressures, and they're correct. I've yet to take it in for a once-over at the garage, though.

It could be the position/angle of the bars as i have Renthals (756) on a 1 inch riser set, and they're rotated back a touch for comfort, but the lightness in the steering seems to have only popped-up recently, and i've had the bars/bike for just over 5 months now. Certainly feels lighter with left turns compared to right, which leads me to think it might be a bearing issue.

I think i'm looking to get some pointers on areas to check.

Ok, this might sound a bit strange but....have you checked the pressures in both the front and back ?...low pressure in the rear can cause these symptoms. ..........

Fuck All.... Sorry Fork Oil

Rear pre load can affect it too

Re: [Technical] Steering feeling very light - helloindustries - 06-11-14

  • Rear pre-load is set at standard (though it could probably do with adjusting because i'm a tubby bastard at 16.5st)
  • Rear pressure wasn't low at last check and i still had the problem, but i will check it again, as i do have a very slow 5psi/week puncture/leak. Probably needs putting back on properly.
  • Fork oil? I'll certainly bring that up tomorrow.

Could be the headstock bearing. If you hold the front brake on and give the bars a good seeing too like they've just stolen your lunch money is there any up and down movement,  looseness or clicking sounds?

I shall check that tomorrow.
I've been wanting to put it through a mock-MOT anyway, seems like a good opportunity.

If you do change fork oil, go for 15w instead of standard 10w oil, you will notice a big improvement.

I shall keep that in mind.

Got it looked at. Bearing was loose. Seems to have fixed it.

If it goes loose again you'll have to replace it
