mot question - solorider - 29-10-14
anyone know if the condition of the main stand comes into the mot? I don't want to take it off yet as it is useful but I have some damage from a recent accident and the fact it was weak from corrosion doesn't help, the stand is still stable and the bike is secure.

I think it depends how fussy your MOT inspector is..... Although there is now specific section for the stand im guessing it could come under the frame section of the test.
"Frame: free from cracks, damage, distortion or corrosion"
But I'm guessing so long as it is in no danger of falling off and it is not the only means of supporting the bike then it would only be an advisory item.

Fill it with body filler and spray the lot Matt black. Wouldn't take long for a quick bodge job and they'll never give it a second look.

Fill and bodge for mot if you want to but I would not trust my bike on that, or take it off for the mot and befor you put it back get it welded up if you can

Hard to see but doubt it would weld as the whole lot looks in a state and metal has thinned a lot. Best option is remove and replace, cheapest is just remove and throw, if you trust it then bodge as above.

don't bodge it, why waste time doing that, then you'll leave it till it fails, done that. repair or replace or remove till you can get one.

I managed to get hold of the local mot place and they have said it is not an mot failure and so long as it is not interfering with something else there is no advisory either, the stand is still very stable, it is only the cross brace that has rot/damage on it.

The cross brace in itself won't cause the bike to fall off the stand if the bike is already on it. However, the stand will become useless as it will no longer support the bike evenly as you try to put the bike on to the stand. Source: this happened on my 600

From my experience just replace the stand or weld a new bridge piece in.
That one you have will fail eventually as the two legs move out of line and one day......$**t !

I should have a replacement stand tomorrow, but I have an mot booked tomorrow as well so wont have time to fit it.

Take the centre stand off today. Not ruling saying it has to be on, but it will likely have to be safe if it is. You'd have to take the old one off anyway!

If it is dodgy then maybe the mot guy will feel responsible if he passes it and the you go and topple t over on the stand and crush yourself.
Or even worse if you dont tell him & he puts it on the centre stand and crushes himself.

If you've got a replacement on way then it's obvious, as above whip off ruined one and put new one on when you have time.

id be inclined to leave stand, if no time to fit new then no time to remove old. If it does fail then you have fixed fime after to replace and retest. if it passes then you have time to replace at your leisure

My bike went through the mot with no mention of the stand, I did mention it to the tester and all he said was it was a bit wobbly, so 12 months not and now I have to get the engineers report done on Monday morning. All to keep the insurance company happy.
