Replacing Ignition Barrel - Immobiliser Question - WhiteZer - 27-09-14

Can anyone tell me if the immobiliser is in the barrel of the ignition?

I may need to replace the barrel and wondered if I'd still need the current key to disable the immobiliser or just replace the old part with a new part and new key.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions or answers and would rather not divulge the info online.

Thanks.

I think the part is in the ECU as when I bought my bike new I was told that if I lost the red key it would cost £800 to replace the ECU ?

I was told the same thing

So it's not just the case of getting a replacement barrel with the three keys, the keys would need to be programmed to the bike?  Or the ECU from the old bike would need to be transferred too?

There are plenty of replacement lock kits for sale, but it sounds like the job could be a nightmare.

It might be easiest to ask at a yamaha dealer what is needed, I'm sure they will tell you what is the best way, well I'm quite sure, although if they can make loads of dosh out of it now I just a bit unsure, ok a lot unsure, forget it don't go anywhere near a yamaha dealer, lol.

Still no luck here.

Yamaha have basically told me to contact specialist Key Cutters to see if they can repair the barrel.
