How compatible are thundercat engine parts? - fuzzyfazer - 24-09-14

as above really, just looking around at parts prices and it seems that thundercat parts are cheaper. Like the cam chain is a third the price of a fazer one. Are they the same size etc?

No expert on thiese particular bikes but what I did notice is that the FZS and YZF models are covered in a single Haynes manual; might give a clue

haynes says internally there basically the same. engine spec shows difference in

camshaft intake & exhaust lobe height and runout (max)
valve lift
clutch
gear final reduction is 48/15T on fzs and 47 0n yzf

Ok. Sounds like there may be some correlation between the two then. Just hoping that if the chains are the same it might save me some cash. Just because Christmas is coming and trying to save for another bike

I can't believe they'd have different cam chains for 2 almost identical engines - the idea of the 2 bikes was to get value out of the one engine product. As far as I'm aware, there are small cam differences, different airbox & carb settings and probably a freer flowing exhaust. Gearbox, crank, casings, barrels, heads, pistons etc will all be the same.

Sure, the two engines have some components in common, but since the cylinder head is obviously not one of them it seems likely that the cam chain could be a different length.

They have a different part No. Fazer is 94591 - 47130 for '98-'03.
Thundercat part No. 9y581 - 32117 for '98 - '02.

There is one on ebay (not mine and I don't know the seller) about £30 inc p+p

Haynes manual say's YZF original chain has a stake-type split-link so with the right tools to split it the camshaft doesn't need removing. FZS I presume can't be split, thus different part number. the good news I would say if you have a split link type already then you can atleast fit and try with minimal work Smile

They are different lengths Fazer has 130 links and the T'cat 118, you can buy open or endless chains if you shop around.

Google search DID chain 92RH2010 x 130 for Fazer.

The chain on the Fazer is a HyVo chain for quieter running whereas the Thundercat is a standard roller/link chain and are different lengths and are not interchangeable.

The Thundercat model code is 4TV and any parts listed on the Fazer parts catalogue with 4TV.xxxxx-xx are the same and are interchangeable.
However many other parts are updated versions of the Thundercat and would have different codes, but would be interchangeable.
Many gerabox parts are the same

One particular part which is the same, but has a different code is the right side engine cover and the reason for the different codes is the Fazer cover is black whereas the Thundercat one is silver.

Wemoto do a split cam chain for the Fazer at a reasonable price and I have one in my engine with 40000 miles without issue.

Thanks :-) that's cleared that up. Thought there must have been a reason they were listed separately and wildly different in price. Knowledge is much appreciated.

It's probably better to think of them as closely related brothers, with their parent being the 1994-95 FZR600R engine.
Unfortunately inherited genes can be a mixed blessing, I believe 2nd gear cog is one of the more troublesome hand-me-downs :-)

Hi guys, I am extremely late but this message is for the future people reading. I successfully swapped my 03 fzs600 camshafts with an 02 yzf600r thundercat's. I kept the same timing chain since I swapped the Fazers camshafts sprockets onto the t-cats camshafts. the timing is not the same on the two, don't be discouraged it wasn't difficult, I just took photos beforehand and eyeballed it since the markings on the camshaft caps are different for the two. I'm not sure if I replaced the Fazers camshafts caps with the thundercats camshaft caps and followed the t-cats timing, if anything would be different or not I'm not sure but I kept the original timing however I believe if I did infact apply the t-cats timing then low end would be subtracted for increased top end.

another thing, if you want a burble tune with lots of pops and bangs, I suggest advancing the original Fazer exhaust cam timing by 1 tooth (I kept it like that for half a year) and no damage was done besides minor power loss but it was well worth the pops Smile

Caps cannot be interchanged and head and caps come as a complete unit because Yamaha caps are line bored in the head during manufacture
