Imperial war museum - fireblake - 12-09-14

Any Foccers in London today. I'm going to the Imperial war museum for the day.
I'll be the bloke all on his own and reading everything. No wife or kids with me so no come on we need to move on to the next exhibit.

I,ll be going the opposite way this weekend Mike as my son starts at pompey uni on monday, so moving him in over the weekend. Its a shame about loomies as that was as far as my old bladder could make it on the way down. the A3 is a good road but its only a matter or time before i join the points and fine for speeding club on that one.!!

This has been a "me day" wish for years.......along with a trip to the WW1 trenches in France.

I've been working near the museum recently and have been once or twice. It's a little overcrowded at the best of times I have to say and an hour is enough to see it all I reckon.
If you are in the area for a while I would head over to Borough Market afterwards (15 minute walk) and have some quality scoff and enjoy a pub or two. If you head towards the river from behind the market there is an excellent riverside walk with the Tate Modern to the West and the Golden Hind replica to the East. It should be really nice there today in the sun.

I'm on my bike and trying to find parking. I'm down a road nearby which is permit only. My question is, can I park in the Motorcycle bay without a permit?

Generally yes. Check the other bikes for permits just in case, but I've never seen a permit bay around that area.

I can't see any permits on the other bikes.. I wasn't sure if bikes can park in any motorcycle bay or not?

I parked in the M/C bay near the museum with no problem. Alas the museum was very busy which made trying to see the exhibits a right pain.

Off to IWM Duxford for the airshow.Vulcan the big draw today & the Lancaster pair + Red Arrows tomorrow,tho they reckon sunday is going to sell out early on Sad

(Lanc pair effect!).

There was a Spitfire "beating up" Brize airfield yesterday evening, could be on his way to this show. Duxford is sometimes worth a visit on a quiet day during the week, as you never know what might be getting an air test - I've watched a Spitfire being put through it's paces there on such a day, when there were hardly any visitors.
The Flying Legends air show has to be the best one they hold. Biggest of it's kind in Europe:

It's only recently had a massive refurb tho hasn't it,which was ongoing when I popped in last year and there was virtually nothing to see :rolleyes so I guess it will probably quieten down a bit soon.

Yep Legends is a fantastic show.This weekend is the last Duxford show this year.No Autumn airshow strangely.

Had a couple of annual leave days to use up before the end of the year recently, so I decided to do a bit of sight-seeing in London.

As well as a trip up The Shard and a wander around Westminster Abbey & St Paul's cathedral, I visited all 3 of the IWM's London sites (HMS Belfast, The Churchill War Room's and the IWM itself).

Have to say, I found HMS Belfast the most interesting and inspiring.
What it must have been like on board when it was engaged in battle I can't even begin to imagine.
I take my hat off to them all.

Belfast is an amazing museum. My wife's Grandad and Great uncle were on the Artic convoys and every time I see footage of the convoys I'm blown away by the heroism of all those who took part.

I'm slightly worried about turning up and finding it reduced to not much more than a internet cafe (science museum)

I did Ypres and Passchendaele a few moons ago, was alone, very eerie, hair still stands on the back of my neck just thinking about it
