Cam chain - Davew - 21-08-14
I get a little bit of rattle when cold and I can't find any evidence of the cam chain ever being done. The bike has done 32k and was wondering if there's any way of checking. Would I get rattle throught the rev range if it was at the end of its life?
Also is it a nightmare to change or worth getting a garage to do it?

If the rattle goes away when warm i wouldn't worry about it for now.

I'm Not 100% sure whether it's valves or cam chain tbh so I'll see how it goes! I also don't want to do it if it may have been done 5k ago without me knowing.

Mine has started rattling quite noticeably when cold too, pretty certain it is the cam chain. It goes away completely though after about 2 miles or so / 5 minutes when the bike gets a bit warmer, but when first started it is pretty loud and quite worrying. I'm sure it never used to be that bad, bike has done 28k. Not sure whether to just leave it and accept its a bit rattly after first starting or get my local garage to have a listen as they are about 300m away and it will still be rattling at that point.

You can be fairly sure if there's a top end rattle it's the cam chain. The valve clearance is more likely to tighten on fazers so they go quieter rather than louder. A bit of a rattle is normal but everyone's definition of a bit of a rattle is different so get it checked out if you want but if it goes away it's probably fine. The normal thing that happens is there's a bit of a rattle and then one day you'll be riding along and the tensioner advances a notch and the rattle goes instantly

The tensioner may be reluctant to click out the last couple of clicks, doing it manually may take up the slack for now. There are post on how to do it.

Mine rattles quite a lot when cold, but less when warmed up
It sounds a bit like someone pouring nuts and washers down a steel pipe.
Neither tappets nor cam chain have ever been done.
Bikes done 77K and still runs o.k., although I noticed it was starting to use oil last year.

I've always compared the noise to a sewing machine.
