Which Screen for touring - WORKS - H - 23-05-14

Hi everyone,
I am new to here so pleased to meet everyone.

I have just moved to Spain and brought my bike with me 2004 FZS1000 which I think is the dogs.........

I am just about to put Spanish plates on her then do some touring, but feel that I may benefit from a taller screen to cut out some of the wind blast in the hills. Any suggestions, recomendations will be much appreciated as to what "works".

In a word none, well not for everybody.

How tall are you, what size are you, what is the problem with the standard screen for you?

So for me I am 5'10" fat bloke and the standard screen puts the airflow on my upper chest, this then goes up the front of my helmet and makes my eyes water. The Yam or MRA touring screen moves the airflow to about mid helmet which causes a lot of noise and buffeting, so much so I can't see properly above about 90 mph.

Most of the double bubble screens do the same with the worst (for me) being the Zero Gravity DB touring.

At the moment I have a Puig DB with an Z-Screen fitted, which works most of the time as it is easy to adjust.

What part of Spain? I'm near Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca.

What's been said so far about best screen being very dependent on your height etc is absolutely true. You might find a taller screen causes more turbulence than you would like, cancelling out any marginal advantage wind-protection wise.

Windblast problems are caused by a combination of factors, and as already suggested, changing the screen is not necessarily going to solve yours. Screen height and shape, the way you sit on the bike, your height, and helmet are all possible contributing factors to your experience. And it can be very much hit and miss as to what solves it for you.

I recently changed my helmet from an HJC IS-17 to an HJC RPHA10 - the improvement was a revelation. No more wind buffeting, even at higher speeds, and a much quieter ride. I'm 6' 2'' and tend to ride in a kind of relaxed slouch :lol

For touring at motorway speeds, I think taking away the windblast from your chest and shoulders is the most comfortable way to go. I can live with a bit of buffeting to my head although generally the taller you go the noisier it can get. It can get tiring hanging on if the wind is pushing at your chest for hours at a time. I've tried many screens but ended up adapting a gen 2 Yamaha touring screen to fit mine. The faster you go the higher the wind is pushed up so Autobahn speeds are still comfortable bolt upright. There is an American company called Rifle I think that make tall and wide screens for touring. This is the way to go if you want real touring comfort IMO. I agree with Nick though, there are many other factors that can make touring more comfortable.

decision making for a screen is tough as so many factors!

I have stock screen and is very noisy... I am 184 cm. I don't mind big touring screen as long as it works. Was thinking of rifle screen not the biggest 20 inch (8 inch higher over stock) but 17 inch (5 inch higher over stock) and then if need be xcreen deflector. My concern is will it be too high to work? General consensus is not always the bigger the better here. Any experience from owners similar size to me or with below screens?

Got a MRA Vario screen on mine works a treat, I'm 6ft 1 and have no problems at all brilliant bit of kit, although not cheap...

6'4" and I've tried most screens on the market, the best one so far is a Fabbri double bubble. I find it works better than the MRA which I found noisy or very noisy.

After fitting not really impressed! No wind on shoulders but very noisy as wind goes onto helmet! If I duck slightly it becomes very quiet...Considering adding X creen from MRA.

I use the standard jobbie, it works great, but only after I fitted handguards

Seems that the hand guards change the airflow of the mirrors!
