Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - Ravenscar - 21-05-14

I've been looking at reviews of the BMW S1000R recently and it struck me that it might just be the kind off all-rounder that could tick many of the same boxes as a Gen 1 FZS 1000. Unfortunately I don't think looks is one of them...

If you were in the market for a brand new bike with all the latest bells and whistles, what would you go for?  I'm not in the market by the way, but I thought it would be interesting to see what my fellow Foccers would consider worthy.

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - Red Ceri - 21-05-14

Test rode a S1000R two weeks ago, was the sport model with all the bells and whistles, quickshifter, traction control, ABS, and varying power and suspension modes.

Total hoot to ride, riding position similar to a GEN1, Bars a little wider and surprisingly only a little more windblast with the standard fag packet size deflector above the headlamp. Got back on my GEN1 and even with 99 R1 forks and raised rear ride height felt like a supertanker when I tried to turn at the first corner.

if I had a spare £12.5K I'd have one tomorrow and forget all about GEN1s, only problem is I don't have a spare £12.5K and if you went into a BMW dealership today and placed a deposit down delivery would be early 2015, there are none left for sale in the UK. The salesman had sold one the day before and delivery was due in November.

Can't wait to see what the half faired one is like that is rumoured for release next year.

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - Timabusa - 21-05-14

Went out for a 170 mile blast Sunday with my bro on his BMW s it is very very fast handles we'll accelerates like he stole it and sounds nice even with the standard can and he was still running it in.His took from January to get only had it 6 days and BMW wanted his bike and a £500:00 deposit and got pissed about something awful but I must say I would definitely buy one!

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - Stupid Luke - 21-05-14

Surely the seat on the BMW is not up to the standard of the FZS?  Could you imagine riding to South of France on one? I will have to try to get a test ride if I can find one in a dealers.

If it were I could probably get one to replace both of my bikes - not sure I would though. I like the V Twin performance of the Superduke and the versatility of the FZS.

Dont bother with the 1200 Multistrada. I didnt rate it at all when I had one for a day and a mate that bought one had numerous problems in the few months before he took an arse raping when trading it in.

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - DekF - 21-05-14

First off, I owned a gen1 for 4 years & a gen2 for 8 years & in their day they were an excellent bike. As an allrounder with good poke virtually peerless in their class.
However, things have moved on exponentially. To compare them with the s1r is very unfair, let alone laughable, as the beemer is leap years ahead in power, handling & technology. Take a test ride on one & you'll see for yourself, okay it's got a few niggles, I'm replacing the levers & blinging it a bit but this is mainly to customise it for my preferences. As to any clown saying they wouldn't buy an astonishingly good bike like the s1r because the seat is uncomfortable would surely miss the whole point of the s1r anyway. Btw, I am going to the S of F this year but will enjoy every minute.
cheers

But this looks very close, would love a spin on one, the S1000RR I test rode a few years ago was brilliant, but still prefer the old Carb Fazers

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - Ravenscar - 21-05-14

With the passion that Fazer owners have for their bikes and the respect that Fazers have from the rest of the community, they must be considered a classic. Especially the Gen 1.  In that sense there is no replacement. Maybe I used the wrong word. Modern equivalent perhaps? We'd expect over a decade of development to result in a better bike in terms of performance and handling.  In real terms I suspect the BMW is cheaper than a brand new Fazer was in 2001 too.

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - unfazed - 21-05-14

but who really wants a common as muck BMW

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - Krezi - 21-05-14

is bmw really a replacement? it's a naked bike after all! co comparing apples to oranges in my view as wind protection would be non existent I think

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - DekF - 21-05-14

I've said already it's an unfair comparison fzs,fz1 & s1r but the similarities in concept between the R1 & the FZS released circa 2001 & now the S1RR & S1R circa 2014 is valid. Both sportsbikes top of their game at the time releasing a detuned, sorry retuned, naked based upon & marketed as sportsbikes without the fairings.
The biggie of course is the technological advancements in those intervening years.

Edit: Paul, the touring screen I have fitted is very effective for it's size, a product of good R&D  Wink

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - nick crisp - 21-05-14

I dunno. I don't need to replace my gen 1. I just need about twenty different bikes  :\

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - ogri48 - 22-05-14

I know for a fact all I need really is a fazer ( gen 1 or 2) and either the Bonnie or the aircooledthou...but Im not a young bloke anymore , if I was I'd want the latest bike too I guess. As is bikes with ten year old technology more than meet my abilities.

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - bri h - 22-05-14

I don't mind the idea of a beemer its the beard I can do without.

You don't want to see a pic of the S1000R.

It's one of the most fugliest bikes I've ever seen.

Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement? - fazer390 - 22-05-14

I sat on a Kwak Z1000SX at the last NEC show and if I had the money this would be my choice...
