Now that takes me back! My very first bike was a Suzuki gt185. I remember lusting after the gt550 but never did buy one. Lovely looking example you've got there.

It's a strange old do blokes.. I too lusted after a gt 550 when I had my 250, and it's a lovely vintage ride, but bikes have come such a long way it's unbelievable.  It feels like a fizzy now lol, but it is beautiful. Only did about twenty miles on it last night, but it felt so much more. Will get a few rides in on it, but penny's brother wants it, so I'm putting it back to  proper 74-77 spec ( chrome headlamp/ fork shrouds, no gaiters, single front disc) so he can show it. The cost of new old stock parts is absolutely terrifying ( getting the correct kickstart was  a hundred quid!!!) and as another example, when i remove the left hand disc ( it's of a gt750) the small round blanking disc that covers the holes in the hub was £35, and it's took a lot of searching to find one as they are a discontinued part, got one from a bloke in Ireland in the end. In all it's a lot of money for a lovely bike that I daren't ride in anything but very good weather, I'll get it finished and put it in the lounge until he finishes working in Canada and comes home to get it. Smile

I had a 380 in a Dresda frame,What a bike that was! Then I rode a standard 380 and scared myself stupid in the first corner!

Brings back memories had the GT380 and a GT750 Kettle, lovely sound even with standard pipes on them.

The stock bike certainly makes for interesting handling and brakes, even on modern new tyres. Back in the day on the original bridge stones (bridgestones were utter shite then, Teflon tyres we called the buggers, if you wanted to stay alive tt100s or road runners were a must) it must have been fairly lethal..and that's with the gt750 twin disc set up, I've gotta lose one of them to get it back to stock, can't wait to try out the demon braking then. Early jap disc set ups were truly abysmal
First ride on this one was to nip my missus up to the post office on norwich road, used the same braking marker as my other bikes and sailed straight past it..
Getting the new bits is an arse.. The second hand stuff I got from an Irish feller that had been hard triple chromed was perfect, the new stuff I paid an arm and a leg for was 50 percent unuseable, 37 years on a shelf had taken it's toll on the thin OE chrome, so you have all the aggro of sending bits back etc..shroud on the left is fine, on the right no good..you can see crazing in the chrome near the join between shroud and mounting bracket..

We had one of these at the last bike shop I worked at, it was sat for ages, years. When we got it all up and running, the boss took it for a spin up the road - what road?! You couldn't see the foccin road for all the smoke while it burned off years of accumulated shit in the pipes!  :lol  Literally couldn't see the kerb on the opposite side of the road when he first went off - talk about the fog of memory!

Such a shame that the era of the road-going 2T bike is over. Just think where we'd be at by now if development had continued - the RG500 I had was the last of the looney-tunes. But Yamaha still make 2T engines - for their boats and jet skis. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they do an outboard motor of about 800cc, that with modern development is actually more fuel efficient than the old things. Anyone fancy putting that in a bike chassis?  :evil

Re: evening ride, jeans, jacket, piss pot, plimsols, no gloves.. - ogri48 - 17-05-14

That would be something indeed.
This bikes the same, if you just start it up to show a mate a few times the un burnt oil pisses out of the anti condensation breathers in the bottom of the pipes when it's back in the garage, you need to take it for a half decent run every time you fire it up really to keep everything clear.
It's nowhere near as quick as summat like a kh500 or even kh400, I'm guessing far more weight and less radical porting, it's more gentle tourer than anything. Except you wouldn't wanna do that too much with petrol what is is..back in this things day it was obviously a lot cheaper. I remember in '76 on me puch sports 'Ped ( yeah right..)I used to put 50p in me tank sometimes, sounds ridiculous but petrol was about 40p a gallon, so I'm guessing in modern terms I was getting 5 or 6 litres :eek  the 50p included a squirt of forecourt 2t too...
I also remember as a kid in the old mans car, shell were giving away " history of flight" coins, but you had to buy a minimum of four gallons, and when I asked dad to put four in so I could get a coin  he said " fuck that it'll be a quid!....."...I think that's about 18 litres for the youngsters on here..though I could be wrong..senility is a bitch..

Re: evening ride, jeans, jacket, piss pot, plimsols, no gloves.. - blackcabbie - 18-05-14

my current 2 2 strokes.......... the single front disc on the 400 is ample powerful enough for bikes performance..... both have self cancelling indicators too..... suspension is a bit crude, but both are really good fun to ride. really different to each other. the lc is faster, but the long stroke 400 much more relaxed..... rd 400 was yellow, but recently had it repainted to original marine blue which is correct colour for a 400c.

Re: evening ride, jeans, jacket, piss pot, plimsols, no gloves.. - nick crisp - 18-05-14

Ooooh, bet the yellow one's quick!  :lol
Two stroke porn first thing in the morning......Aaagh, I think I'm going blind!

All this 2T stuff getting posted on here lately - it's cruelty to non 2T owners, now just stop it ok?
(= more please......... :b)
