exhaust studs. - Lumpy - 12-05-14 what an absolute cu....... pain of a job that is. All 8 replaced over 16 hours at the weekend. Every one needed drilling out, had some extended drills made up to get past the frame ails. Would have been easier access with the forks and wheel out for sure. Replaced with stainless 302 studs 5mm overlength, 18mm long stainless barrel nuts and anti gall grease used. Happy now but wasn't over the weekend :'( watch the left hand one, breaking through the stud cut into an oilway, loctite 243 sealed the stud, coulda been expensive that one. Re: exhaust studs. - Super_Monkey - 12-05-14 I bought my 1000 a couple of weeks ago and with the shitty weather we've had I've tackled the majority of the corroded fasteners, bolts, etc etc, when I pulled the rad off to clean and re-spray it I looked at the exhaust bolts and with it being a ten year old bike, the amount of rust on them was huge! I had to think for a while if I should tackle them or not and I passed because of fear of what you had to go through lol... Re: exhaust studs. - Lumpy - 12-05-14 One snapped on mine so bit the bullet. Re: exhaust studs. - freeware - 12-05-14 I've recently joined the club of 'snapped stud' - usual 3rd cylinder. Re: exhaust studs. - hightower - 13-05-14 This seems to be a common occurrence this past 2 months - everyone must be putting nice shiny stainless pipes on ready for the summer Re: exhaust studs. - Lumpy - 13-05-14 (13-05-14, 08:35 AM)hightower link Wrote: This seems to be a common occurrence this past 2 months - everyone must be putting nice shiny stainless pipes on ready for the summermy downpipes are stainless but they are not shiny any more. I was going to bring them back to shiny but couldn't be arsed Re: exhaust studs. - fazersharp - 13-05-14 Has any one heard of kroil or plus gas as im thinking of buying some and putting on my studs every month even though I have no plans to touch them as yet - hopfully when I do I will of been treating them for months/ years and they wont snap. kroil looks the best but is very hard and expensive to come by Re: exhaust studs. - Buzz - 13-05-14 I got all my rusty lumps off with a Dremel/flexi shaft with no pre-soaking and no snappage...and believe me those things were rusted on. Drilling out 8 would've made me sell the bike I think! Re: exhaust studs. - hightower - 13-05-14 I've got a tin of Plus Gas - I've been soaking my Kwak engine screws in it for weeks now. I will let you know how effective it has been when I try to undo the nasty JIS heads later tonight. Drilling out 8 would've made me sell the bike I think!mine were homogenised, no amount of heat and penetrating anything would have, or indeed, did work. Same for the studs in the head. Replacing the nuts alone with stainless and a bit of anti gall grease would be a better option that trying to prevent seizure on the MS crap. The only one that came off of mine was one that needed an 8mm socket tapped on there was that much erosion ![]() Re: exhaust studs. - freeware - 13-05-14 (13-05-14, 08:35 AM)hightower link Wrote: This seems to be a common occurrence this past 2 months - everyone must be putting nice shiny stainless pipes on ready for the summer What summer? ![]() This how I've disassembled my collector in less than 2 minutes... http://youtu.be/fCEeVwMIF3s Re: exhaust studs. - Lumpy - 13-05-14 (13-05-14, 06:25 PM)freeware link Wrote:
What summer? ![]() This how I've disassembled my collector in less than 2 minutes... http://youtu.be/fCEeVwMIF3se
jammy git |
