Starting bike - blipping the accelerator to get her going - leviathanrising - 28-04-14

When you start your bike from cold the procedure should be choke > ignition in neutral > starts without a hitch > wait to heat up > choke off, simples.

Mine seems to cough but I need to pull the accelerator back a bit to fire it up. Any suggestions to remedy this? It was happening four years previous before its four year storage sleep.

Possibly it's too rich, mine starts fine without choke in all but very cold weather.

I always need choke to start in the morning -- except in the very warmest and driest weather. I also need to blip the throttle for about 1/2 second when I press the starter.

I always need to blip too, and choke - not for too long, I mean the blip is maybe up to 3k rpm and then it's fine and sits on the choke. If I don't blip it fires and immediately stalls again.

Had that on the vast majority of my carb'd bikes. Pretty normal stuff really, either that or all my bikes were kmackered!

Following on from what stevie said - why do you (the op) say starting procedure is as you say? It's not an injection bike, where the ecu is deciding how much fuel to out through - with carbs, you have to decide that, and every bike is different. My fzs600 always appreciated (from brand new) a tiny bit of throttle to start. Others are different. Do what works for your bike. Stop worrying, ride more!

Even tho I love the character or carburettors, that simple prod on the injected bike starter button no matter what the temperature, is kind of cool  Smile

Unless you own an Aprilia Futura, then it decides whether to start, backfire, or catch fire! :'(

Oh Ok.

So it's nothing to worry about then.

After my bikes amazing recovery after sitting for 4 years was kind of worried. But remembered it had done that before, so maybe it's one of those things. Amazing how after some TLC you can bring something back to life. Just waiting for a slot to get it MOT'd then it should be fun fun fun...
