Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

Need some help. Bike is fired up and sounds good - I need to sort downpipes as smoke coming out at head slightly (I think it must just not be sealed tight enough?)

Anyway, is it me or is my engine ticking/chugging or does it sound fine?

Re: Ticking? - His Dudeness - 21-04-14

Does it go away when you pull the clutch in?

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

I'll go check. Is it abnormal though? Just don't know if being paranoid.

Re: Ticking? - His Dudeness - 21-04-14

If it goes away when you pull the clutch in it's normal. A carb balance will help stop it

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

Yeah it does

Re: Ticking? - stevie-g1968 - 21-04-14

yep, that's the clutch....sounds like a ducati :rollin.. mine does it and its normal.
it should go when the clutch is pulled in, a carb balance may help?..ive not balanced mine as im not  overly worried about the noise.

Re: Ticking? - His Dudeness - 21-04-14

No harm giving the carbs a balance then. You can notch the clutch basket if you leave it too long but it would take quite a while.

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

So what is it?

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

And how easy is carb balance

Easy enough Wink Carbs out, tie some string around the carbs and hang them off a flat surface. If it hangs to the left add some weights on the right, if it hangs to the right add some to the left until it's balanced. Make sure you use a spirit level when you install them back on the bike Wink

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

I haven't got a spirit level. Will have to make something using wood and ball bearings :p

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

I just done check. Looks easy enough. But could you explain what it is causing this and how balancing would fix, just for understanding. Thanks

Re: Ticking? - His Dudeness - 21-04-14

They all rattle a bit at idle. The smoother you're engine is running the less they'll rattle. By syncing the carbs you're ensuring the engine is running as smooth as possible. It's not going to cure it 100%. It'll just reduce it

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 21-04-14

So how did dipping clutch stop the noise

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 22-04-14

OK. I have the clutch noise which send to have gotten slightly worse since yesterday. It goes away when I dip the clutch, but I'm planning on balancing tonight.

I however have a second ticking. Quieter, possibly faster than the clutch noise. I hear it sat idling, not sure if exist while on the move. If I select first, find the bite and push to counter it (so engine slightly pulling against my grounded legs) it goes.

Not sure if this noise existed before, couldn't say I noticed.

Any clues

.......yes take off your fkn ..watch!! Big Grin

Re: Ticking? - johna6968 - 22-04-14

By its nature fzs never really been a quiet motor.. Should that ticking develope into a loud bang followed by silence, then worry  :thumbup

Re: Ticking? - hightower - 22-04-14

I'll see what balancing the carbs does. It is a little vibratey on the whole but other than that seems to be smooth.

Should I expect some noise from the cam chain or should it be silent. Not sure if being paranoid.
