Chopped out my scotoiler - cfoley - 14-04-14
Beautiful morning, thought I'd ride my bike to work. Ended up having to get the bus.
Last time I washed my bike, the tube from the scotoiler fell away from where it was fixed and was dragging along the floor. It had long since run dry so I thought it would be a 2 minute job to take it off.
After removing a couple of cable ties the hose still wouldn't come away. Decided to trim it so cut away the part dragging on the floor and chopped it it near the scotoiler too.
So far so good. Didn't know what the other hose was for, couldn't see where it went so chopped it anyway which made it east to follow... right to the carburettor (I think). I have no idea what to do with that, or even if it is OK to ride my bike until I get it sorted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It attaches to a vaccuum pipe on the carb. You just need to blank the pipe off. It came with little black blanking plugs originally, not sure if you can still buy those from somewhere though.

If the rubber plug isn't there then cut the hose that goes to the scottoiller and leave about an inch extra, remove from the bike and melt the cut end with a lighter and then squeeze the molten end together (careful because it will be very hot and stick to your skin) thus sealing the pipe and making a temporary replacement for the missing rubber plug.

The bike came with the scotoiler so I'm sure the plug is long gone. I'll give the temporary fix a shot tonight.
What should I buy for a permanent solution?

Or instead of heat you could use a self tapping screw of the correct size, which flat head and put that in the tube.

Thanks for the self-tapping screw idea but I'm going to go with the lighter suggestion... for the simple reason that I have a lighter and I don't have a self tapping screw. Should only be temporary anyway.
What happens if I screw it up and the hose either isn't sealed or pops open while riding?

If it falls off you'll have a big vacuum leak. That cylinder will be sucking way too much air and it'll lean out. It probably won't idle and it'll be way down on power and generally run like a giraffe with two legs tied together

Well that's it patched up. Will take it out this evening for a spin if I get the chance. Now to order the parts.

Well it's sucking it in, so unlikely. As long as the screw is big enough.
