TPS advice please - darrsi - 18-03-14
Noticed that the bike has felt a bit jittery the last 2 days, and as it reminded me of TPS issues I had last year I thought I'd check it out.
The first check I did resulted in 0rpm so I attempted to adjust it but the rev counter needle didn't move.
So I then went through the motions again, unplugged it, and it went straight to 3000rpm, which is correct as that means it's either unplugged or faulty, then I plugged it back in and this time it went to 10,000rpm BUT it still wouldn't move at all when I went to adjust it again.
I moved the whole TPS unit as far each way that it would allow and the rev needle stayed put.
This was a used TPS that I replaced the original one with last time, so I don't know it's age or history, but the question is does this point to a faulty unit again?
I would have expected it to go to 3000rpm if it was knackered so I'm a bit confused by it, although I do know they can gradually break down rather than just stop working!
Any thoughts appreciated on the quick, 'cos I'll need to source another one ASAP if you reckon it's another dud as well?
I recognised the bikes behaviour straight away and as it's showing the wrong code I personally think it is dodgy but would like another opinion from you good people?

Hi Darrsi. It certainly sounds like the unit is up the swanny again. I'm guessing as you've stated you didn't know it's history when you bought it that it could be well used by now and has probably broken down.
You've probably done it anyway but I would probably give the electrical contacts a good clean and try it again and if that doesn't work maybe order another 2nd hand one. Maybe if there are any local foccers to you they could lend you theirs to see if it does the trick and save you wasting your money if it ends up being something more indepth.

The one I changed last year broke down over a period of time and as it was a part that was all a bit new to me it took a while to fathom out.
I took a chance back then as well as I was getting weird readings too, but as soon as I swapped it the bike felt right again and it sat okay at 5000rpm, although I did have to adjust it a couple of times afterwards until it settled right.
I've just found one on the Fazerspares site so may just take the plunge again, I couldn't see any others anywhere else.
It's £39 instead of £210 new from AJ Sutton's, so there's quite a price difference.

Bike ran very jittery again this morning, probably as i've upset the TPS position by trying to adjust it.
I'm fairly sure it's the TPS that's on it's way out now so i have one on order.

Just for future reference if anyone else has similar issues, mainly at lower speeds the engine sounds like it's 'shivering', like when a person who is really cold tries speaking, and generally doesn't run as smoothly as it should. At higher speeds it's not as noticeable.

Just tried to see if I could adjust the TPS again, but it still wouldn't do anything at all.
So took it off and put my "new" one on and it adjusted to 5000rpm straight away.........happy days. :woot :woot :woot

Yeah, the only downside is that it could happen again at any time as buying 2nd hand means the TPS unit will still be quite old, plus i won't know the mileage it's been through.
I'm glad i knew the symptoms though, it saved a lot of time, and i'm also surprised that it doesn't seem to be a common problem on here?
Maybe i've just been unlucky? :\
On the AJ Sutton website there's a list of bikes that they are compatible with but no part number, but we're obviously looking at carbed bikes up to 2003, so any used TPS is gonna be a minimum 11 years old with unknown mileage.
I may begrudgingly have to buy new if it happens again. :'(

Well you never know, your latest one could last you ages yet.
By the way, if you do eventually need to take the plunge any buy a new one, ring up a few dealers first as I find most Yamaha dealers can undercut the prices AJ Sutton have listed on their website.

Okay, thanks, i'll bear that in mind, either that or buy 2nd hand ones in bulk. :lol
