Miss fire - Paul Kent - 06-03-14
Just started the bike after a few weeks sitting dormant and it's developed a miss fire. When revved up it sounds fine, just tick over and gentle throttle has the issue.
It's been out in all that rain and wind we've had lately and fear water has got in somewhere.
Any hints or tips as what to look for?

could be the fuel in the tank has gone off.....have you added new fuel?
stick a slug of injector cleaner in with some fresh fuel and take it for a run to see if it clears.

There's a Smurf in your tank. What happens is you leave your bike parked up for more than a week and the fuel ionises. If that happens and there's a full moon at exactly one hour after ionisation a Smurf appears in the tank and causes a missfire at idle. It's a well known problem on the Fazers. Yamaha have been working on it since December 98 but they haven't figured out a solution yet. I heard putting garlic behind your ear reduces the chances of it happening but that could be bullshit.

Took it for a blat and seems to be better. I hope so as it's being sold tomorrow!!
Fuel is only 3 weeks old, I'd hope it hadn't of gone off in that short time

Make sure you mention the Smurf in the tank when you're selling it. Full disclosure and all that. He could sue if you don't :lol

Water in the plug caps.
Unscrew them spray the inside of the cap where the coils wires go in with wd40 and spray the wires and rubber boots with it also, screw the wires back in reseat the boots and fire it up.

Had a similar problem with a fazer that had been stood for two years.
It was a duff plug.
What caused a plug to fail, given that it was running fine two years earlier and hadn't been run since, I have no idea.

First thing I would do is change the plugs. I had a similar problem recently, with similar circumstances. Sitting out in the rain neglected. Changed the fuel, filter, cleaned and balanced the carbs, even took the plugs out and cleaned them. All back together and still rough as a badgers arse. Put new plugs in and all perfect now. Mine hadn't been changed in about 4 years though, so they owed me nothing.
