exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 16-02-14 Having a bit of a spring clean...got both wheels off in readyness for new tyres tomorrow, I've wanted to polish the downpipes since I've had the bike but to do a good job they need to come off.....looking at the studs I think I may have a bit of bother.......so......do or dont ? Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - Kosmic Kartman - 16-02-14 Polish, polish, polish, rub, rub, rub. Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 16-02-14 Hi kosmic....on or off ?........I'll get exupnut to do the rubbing, hes had lots experience :lol Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - noggythenog - 16-02-14 Hey Red i'mSurprised that they are your downpipes....being so filthy n'all, look like they've been salvaged from the seabed but to be fair you do use your bike. They do look like they are going to give you mega hassle but then again if you plan on keeping the bike then they are going to need to come off eventually so why not now. Do the mighty thous suffer the same way as the 600's with studs snapping???? Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - Mattsplat - 16-02-14 I bet at least two snap off! Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 16-02-14 Been spraying with wd40 and managed to just move 6 nuts.using a stubby rachet so as not to put too much force on them....its the middle two that are putting up a fight...they are a little rounded so looks like someones been here before....need to find my 6 sided scocket think that will help. The paints peeling real bad and I plan to repaint the whole engine when it gets warmer.so they need to come off at some point. Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - Kosmic Kartman - 16-02-14 As Mattsplat says and I reckon you've got a fight on your hands. Wire brush to get the clag off and then soak with penetrating spray over a few days before attempting that. Also a blow torch might come in handy for heating nuts. Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 16-02-14 3 down 5 to go...still cant move the middle 2 :\ Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - bigbluebear - 16-02-14 Why do you need to take them off, mix up some autosol and a small amount of WD and rub like foc, then double wrap a strip of cloth round each pipe at a time and pull each end running the cloth to the top of each pipe. This works a treat and these bad boys will be like mirrors......trust me I'm a serial cleaner Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 16-02-14 Hi bbb......the paint on the engine and covers is peeling big time so I plan to re-paint it, be a much neater job with the downpipes out of the way ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - bigbluebear - 16-02-14 Better access with then off then, looks like you've got a bit of work to do to bring them up.....may be better with the whole engine out Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - Drax - 16-02-14 Keep us informed with your progress. Leap of Faith /Determination/Luck all spring to mind. Get in there lad!! :thumbup Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - solorider - 16-02-14 mine were actually worse than those, the top clamps on mine were a lot thinner and the studs were nearly half the thickness, I managed to get all the studs off without breaking any, I used a blow torch and a stud extractor. ![]() ![]() ![]() and the only way I could get my downpipes off was in bits ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - Mick-H - 17-02-14 +1 for the blow torch. Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 17-02-14 3 nuts off and the studs look good, soaked the other 5 in wd40,another 3 are loose and i think they will come off this evening without any problems ![]() ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - nick crisp - 17-02-14 (16-02-14, 11:17 PM)solorider link Wrote: mine were actually worse than those, the top clamps on mine were a lot thinner and the studs were nearly half the thickness, I managed to get all the studs off without breaking any, I used a blow torch and a stud extractor. Now that looks like some undersea shit! :eek Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - bigbluebear - 17-02-14 I think even I would struggle to clean these up :eek Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - old son - 17-02-14 (17-02-14, 07:59 AM)red98 link Wrote: 3 nuts off and the studs look good, soaked the other 5 in wd40,another 3 are loose and i think they will come off this evening without any problems WD40 is not penetrating fluid. You really would be better off using Plus Gas or something similar. Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - Andy FZS - 17-02-14 Does anyone know why I can see solos pics but not reds on my tablet? Sorry nothing to do with the thread but I'm missing out on the pics ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - limax2 - 17-02-14 (17-02-14, 10:28 AM)Andy FZS link Wrote: Does anyone know why I can see solos pics but not reds on my tablet? Sorry nothing to do with the thread but I'm missing out on the picsI get the same if I'm not logged onto the site. When logged on I see both sets of pictures. Often happens and I just assumed it was down to which way the pictures had been put on the site. I'm not an expert on such things so could well be wrong ![]() |
