Re: foccin conservative - hightower - 07-02-14

Some info might be useful. If you are referring to the recent private bill for renaming a bank holiday after her, well that's never going to be passed, and MPs have stated as such.

Nah didn't think that Smile
Sorry bit too vague, I was referring to the conservative mp who is saying now that we should not celebrate our WW1 victory.

Re: foccin conservative - hightower - 07-02-14

After reading that article I tend to agree with it. There is no reason we should all be merry and celebrating - there were many men and women lost in that war, for both sides, and I believe singing and dancing about it in the street is the wrong way to go about it.

We must not forget the sacrifice made by many people, and the victory we achieved that ensured our freedom this day - but dancing in the street is not the way to do that.

Have to admit I only heard edited version on radio coming in to work this morning and only got link as requested.  So yeah I agree too having read the full story

Re: foccin conservative - nick crisp - 07-02-14

Victory celebrations at the end of a just war (e.g. WW2) is ok in my view. Otherwise, commemoration of the fallen is perhaps more appropriate.

Re: foccin conservative - fireblake - 09-02-14

Never a celebration. A commemoration for the poor sods that never came back, and the poor sods that did come back. God bless them all

Where's Guinness?? I think we've just broke the record for shortest internet argument EVER!  :b

Re: foccin conservative - midden - 10-02-14

Lol no argument really, I took celebration in wrong context for particular war and as corrected its commemorate not celebrate Smile

Just goes to show arguments can be settled peacefully and without bloodshed Smile

Re: foccin conservative - hightower - 10-02-14

That calls for celebration Smile

Re: foccin conservative - pitternator - 14-02-14

Has there been any war worth commemorating ?...to answer that we should look to reasons if any the war broke out , and what the outcome meant for the victor. WW1 was a pure folly destined to happen if you study the way the great nations postured and allianced in the lead up to 1914. As such I tend to agree we should somberly remember the millions of innocents whose lives were casually thrown away by the idiots leading us.
WW2 is completely different . That was fought for freedom of the world from dictatorial/ imperialist oppression.More people died, but there are firm grounds to argue it was for the betterment of mankind.Ironically we tripped  into this war through our alliance with Poland, but its hard to argue Hitler would not have consumed us had we tried to stay out of it , as so many countries found to their cost.
