Puffin crossing - midden - 02-02-14

Just doing the Motorcycle theory practice test and the question mentions Puffin crossing.
I've always known them as pelican crossings. Am I wrong or just outdated? Sad

Re: Puffin crossing - midden - 02-02-14

Ah no Q.36  mentions pelican crossings I'm safe Smile

Re: Puffin crossing - mickvp - 02-02-14

pelican just has a push button, but puffin also has sensors to tell when people are actually at the crossing.

and toucan (two-can) crossings are ones for pushbikes as well as pedestrians.

I assume you are just doing the practice for shits and giggles, and you dont actually have to take a theory test?

Re: Puffin crossing - fazersharp - 02-02-14

I was helping someone with practising the hazard perception test video thing where you have to click when you see a hazard, so I had a go and was clicking for everything, damp road, manhole cover, wet leaves, no on leaves on trees so looks icy, low sun in my face, woman flicking hair in car mirror, knob with fat exhaust. FAILED but it was the obvious stuff I should of clicked for like bus a stopped ahead.

So if someone like yourself, who has plenty of road experience, fails, does it mean the test is not realistic? It seems it's down to how you interpret a hazard, and with a level of risk set by someone else - you then have to guess where that anonymous person would set that level. All the things you mentioned could be seen as hazards, or potential hazards.

Re: Puffin crossing - fazersharp - 02-02-14

The test is stupid, one bit (if I remember rightly ) was a cyclist coming in the opposite direction somewhere in the middle distance -- don't click - that's not it, then a car appears in the scene at a distance behind the cyclist, right im clicking as the car will soon be moving out to overtake the cyclist and ive spotted what will be happening in 20 seconds time, But that was a fail as I clicked too soon and the correct time to click according to the test was much later when the car was nearer to the cyclist. That's not perception, that's the hazard happening NOW.

Re: Puffin crossing - AndyL - 02-02-14

I was told to click when I saw a potential hazard but to click again when it became a proper hazard.

Re: Puffin crossing - fazersharp - 02-02-14

Yeh there is a "sweet spot" where you are suposed to click, but I think clicking too early gets you negative points or somthing

Re: Puffin crossing - Grahamm - 02-02-14

IIRC the wording on the Hazard Perception Test is that it's a "developing hazard", ie not just a potential hazard which you've probably already seen and taken into account if you're an experienced rider...!

stupid predictor Wink

Re: Puffin crossing - Lawrence - 03-02-14

I found the best way to do it is click 3-4 times about a second apart.  If you're a second early you'll still catch it with the second/third click.

Seems more about playing computer games than safe road riding... :rolleyes

Not sure if the bike one is the same but I was helping somone with a car one, and im sure that if you clicked too early it went against you.
Yes you are right it is more about playing a game as i wasnt not seeing the hazard but not clicking when i should and after a few gos I learnt how to "play" it

Re: Puffin crossing - Skippernick - 03-02-14

Its a bit like a car/bike test, you learn how to pass the test and THEN you learn how to drive/ride properly.

Re: Puffin crossing - Dead Eye - 03-02-14

You never lose points for mis-clicking during the tests. If you click to early or late however, it will count as a 0 for that hazard (maximum is 5 I believe). If you click to much you also score 0

This.  You'll never lose points. The reason I do 3-4 times is that if you click half a second early you'll get 0. If you click a couple of times you'll definitely get it.

Afaik car and bike tests are exactly the same.
