Brake Disc Bolts - old son - 17-01-14

Would it be OK to reuse front and rear disc bolts when I fit my new discs?

If your bike is your main transport and you can't afford to risk it being off the road then it would be worth investing in at least one set of replacement bolts. If everyting goes fine, you wont need them but if you do have a problem, it wont keep the bike off the road while you wait for them to arrive.

I'm fitting a rear disc. If I buy a set of bolts then I'll use the new ones. I heard somewhere that these bolts tended to stretch?? I'll remove them carefully and put some locktite on them before they go back. Thanks for your comments.

Use a properly fitting impact driver to remove them.


They WILL be seized and they WILL round if you don't.

So my idea of a long bar with a snap on 6mm Allen socket is just a pipe dream?? Buggar!!!!

No, the first five will be fine. Only the last bolt will be mangled, and it wont even be mangled as such, just smoothly rounded.

No, the first five will be fine. Only the last bolt will be mangled, and it wont even be mangled as such, just smoothly rounded.

I was thinking of changing both front discs too!! I will try the rear this weekend, if the bolts get buggered I can still use the bike (but not the rear brake)lol

Just break the lock on each bolt before moving on to the next. Do not attempt to loosen or remove any bolt until all of them have been released, then if one gets focced up, you can just retighten the others and cary on riding until you have sourced replacement bolts.

Aye, I should know as I sheared one of my replacements bolts a few weeks back......still not fixed it......but wouldn't dare do what you suggest is to ride with a focced up bolt

Mark it dead center with a punch. Drill it using a left hand drill bit and a variable speed drill, start slowly and do not use the full revs of the drill, to fast and your likely to break the bit.
The heat from the drilling will soften the loctite and as you are drilling it will also slowly unscrew the bolt. I would start with about a 4mm bit

I'm too scared I do more damage, I have my bike mechanic coming round in the next day or so and he can use his silky skills to remove it....besides it may cost me more if I foc it up.

Understandable, but should be no problem to a good machanic.
Many are not aware of left hand drill bits, which the the job much easier.

Today has been a good day, rear disc and pads changed plus both front discs and pads changed. Used heat gun then impact driver then long bar. Every bolt undid as it should!
