Looking for a destination - slimwilly - 30-12-13 Looking for a destination on a dry day,,take your pick of these places of interest http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25465210 Re: Looking for a destination - nick crisp - 30-12-13 Hi Bill I quite often pass Avebury on summer rides. There's not a great deal to see, unless standing stones are really your thing. A good little pub/restaurant, but it only has a tiny car park and is usually jammed solid with foreign tourists. Can't even squeeze a bike in most of the time, and further car parking (in a field from what I can see) leaves you a bit of a walk to get to the stone circle. Most of the best roads for riding are to the south and west. If you head north, it's a good one, but you pretty soon hit Swindon, easy to get lost there if you don't know it. Canterbury is a nice little walled town - the cathedral is stunning and well worth a visit. Some good little restaurants that I don't recall being too expensive, a nice walk around the town (only small, doesn't take long) and some interesting historic buildings as well as the cathedral. There's a car park nice and central, and usually a spot to lock the bike up. I've done loads of castles and historic houses/parks in the south east, there are some very good ones, mostly Kent/Sussex, if you're interested give me a shout. The others on your list I haven't visited myself, but hope this helps. ![]() PS Blenheim Palace not far from me is worth a visit - large parklands, the palace itself is the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough, and was Winston Churchill's childhood home. A great walk around the park, with monuments and follies, Italianate water garden, lakes and woodland. The palace is stuffed full of exquisite paintings, period furniture etc, and there is a half decent restaurant/café. Canterbury: Re: Looking for a destination - nick crisp - 30-12-13 Blenheim Palace: Re: Looking for a destination - slimwilly - 30-12-13 I think my favourite places will be those in Wales..yep Wales,,there are some on the list,,then I will have to ride the Welsh roads again,,oh yes oh yes ooooohhhhh Re: Looking for a destination - nick crisp - 30-12-13 Wales - Harlech, Caernarfon, Carreg Cennen, Raglan castles all worth a visit too. Caernarfon is a nice town to walk around. Harlech great views of Snowdonia from the ramparts. Carreg Cennen a steep climb up the hill, but very atmospheric. Gower and....(oh jeez, what's the famous coast stretch with the coast path?! :lol ) on my list of places still to check out too. And must do Caerphilly again too - only vague memories from a school visit of that one. Ah, and Conwy - B&B'd there on my last UK tour - another nice town with fantastic castle on the estuary. ![]() 1. Caernarfon castle. 2. Conwy. 3. Carreg Cennen. 4. Snowdonia from Harlech castle. Re: Looking for a destination - Dave48 - 30-12-13 If you are interested in Celtic history then there are an amazing number of standing stones, stone circles & burial sites in the Principality. I have a book titled "The Ancient Stones of Wales" written by Chris Barber & John Godfrey Williams-Blorenge Books,Abergavenny,1989. ISBN Softback 0-9510444-7-8 Just check out an OS map of the Brecons or Gower. Plenty of beautiful roads to ride visiting them! |
