problem with clutch action being heavy - silo - 03-12-13

Found the clutch cable on my 2006 FZ1n had nearly sheared through at the lever end. It had only lasted 6,000 miles, the mileage on the bike. Spend a lot of time replacing it (right pain to do) with a pattern cable (TSX). The lever action is very heavy, and was I seem to remember heavy with the original cable, but not as heavy.
Anybody any ideas why?? The cable can only be routed one way, and I do not think it is rubbing/dragging on anything. Is it the pattern cable?? clutch problem?? Bike works ok, without any clutch slip.

I got an aftermarket clutch cable from Wemoto for my Gen1 which felt stiff and lasted barely 1k miles. The OE cable was a huge improvement - it's over 50 quid for a reason I guess...

TSX cables are shite.

It WILL break.

Change it for a genuine one now before you are stranded.

As mentioned above, the pattern parts can be a risk. My first one lasted 5 miles because there was no crimp stoping the last section of the cover sliding back up into the metal middle section. The result was the lever got closer and closer to the bar without the clutch engaging. Its replacement had a bare minimum crimp but knowing what to look for, I was able to beef it up myself. Even so, it has only lasted a couple of thousand miles bit is now getting gritty no matter how much I lube it. I suspect the internal liners have worn through and the cable is on its way out. Time to bite the bullet and get an OEM.

Thanks for the info. I have just ordered an original Yam one. Ouch. Now all I have to do is spend another 3 ish hours taking it all apart and putting back together. Bollox!!!! You live and learn..sometimes...Why did they have to bury the damn cable so well and create a right pain of an attachment at the cluch end!!

if its any consolation - it does feel reassuringly decent quality when you take it out the bag..

It takes ten minutes or less to replace the clutch cable on a Gen 1, I cant imagine the Gen2 taking much longer unless you are doing something the hard way.

Undo old cable at both ends, tape bottom of new cable to top of old one and carefully pull old one out. This will pull the new cable through the correct path. Big Grin

Connect at both ends and adjust as necessary.

I see all you guys who say its a easy "ten minute" fix are Gen 1's. Mine is a 2006 gen 2. The cable has a fixed 90 degree metal bend mid way, and a angled metal header. It is routed/hidden on the inside of the frame, access obstructed by the airbox, tank and a two sections of main wiring loom for starters. if anyone can do a cable change on mine "that easily" your name must be houdini.

Problem solved. Fitted the new genuine Yamaha clutch cable. Only took 1.5 hrs this time with a quick coffee break.

Now the clutch is so smoooooth and light. Moral of the story is definitely fit original equipment.

As for TSX pattern cables... don't bother cos they're SHITE
