Fitting flat bars - farmer giles - 07-11-13

Hi,

I've just bought a 2010 FZ8n and I am thinking about a lists of mods to make.

I've already ordered an exhaust, hanger and a tail tidy but thinking about flat bars and bar end mirrors..

My question is if I fit standard Rethal flat bars (670mm wide) will I have to extend any of the control cables or will they fit without any mods..  Also what about fitting the controls, are there locating pegs that go into the bars meaning I'll have to drill holes in my new bars ?

finally fitting bar end mirrors should i get a pair with integrated bar end weights or is losing the bar end weights not an issue on ther FZ8 ?

any input appreciated

thanks
Martyn

Got a feeling if you fit flat bars, there's a good chance of them interrupting with the fork leg top adjusters, especially if you've dropped the forks through.

I've played with the fz1 bars set up a fair bit, I fitted low risers, flat bars, bar extenders, mixed and matched those three, It just made the bike uncomfortable! So now I'm on to fat bars conversion with a fairly similar rise to standard, just a bit straighter but it looks so much better.

If you want to fit bar end mirrors, I can recommend the Oberon type off fleabay if they Stoll do them.
Yet again, I've tried several sets in the past, and these were the best.[Image: 4y2esy8y.jpg]

stevierst

what bars are they ?  The flat bars I was looking at look like a similar profile to those and I was not thinking about changing the risers or anything and the FZ8 does not have any top adjusters on the forks.  I was just planning a straight swap to the 'flat' bars from the OE ones..  Did you have to drill anything to fit the controls or was it a simple swap over ? Assume all the cables reached ok..

Do you know how wide those bars are ?

The mirrors are similar to ones I've seen already..

Thanks..

edit..  sorry one more thing. Are the standard bars 22mm dia ?

On the white bike, they're WRP fat bars. 25mm clamp methinks, and 760mm wide.
All my controls fitted ok, but there are two ways of doing it.
1. You can drill the bars and use the locating lugs on the switchgear.
2. You can remove the lugs and wrap either double sided tape, or as I use, zinc oxide medical tape around the bars, and clamp the switchgear over them.
Tried both options, and tbh option 2 is the easiest.

The bars on the blue bike are cheapo eBay motocross bars with 40mm rise. They were over 800mm wide!! Had to chop them down a bit so they were comfy.

Appreciate it...

Just found a pic of the fz1 with the original flat bars and 1" risers. Things get a little 'cosy' to say the least.[Image: vanesu7u.jpg]
