Best Biking Roads of Britain - nick crisp - 03-11-13

I was wondering if between everyone on here we could compile our own Top Ten Biking Roads of Britain? Or maybe you can each come up with your own 10. You might include some of your local ones if you think they deserve a spot high up on the list.
Obvious ones might include:
Cat & Fiddle road, Peak District
Snake Pass, Peak District
A87, Invergarry to Kyle of Loch Alsh (although you could probably carry on all the way to Portree and still add some really good bits).
Just about anything in mid Wales - anybody care to choose a favourite from this excellent biking area?

As well as giving you something to do on the long winter evenings, I thought it might be a help to those of us who like to get a bit further afield on our ride outs, or indeed help folk to plan a UK tour. Include thoughts about the scenery encountered, maybe interesting places to visit and good cafes/rest stops to be had along the way.

Don't worry if you can't come up with ten - just say what road/s you particularly love to ride and why.

I aint telling, because before I know it everyone will be riding it and then the locals will complain (cause of loud exhausts) and then there will be speed restrictions - cameras and all kinds of crap to spoil it.

Re: Best Biking Roads of Britain - nick crisp - 03-11-13

If it's that good, probably hundreds of bikers already know about it, assuming it wasn't secretly laid recently?  Wink
If not, how about choosing something else?

North West/ Cumbria/ Lancashire.
A686 Hartside pass:- Awesome!! twisty technical supermoto-esque road. Be careful, the bends tighten!!
A5074 Lythe Valley:- Hilly, fast, with twisty sections.
A592 Kirkstone pass:- Slow, Twisty technical, very narrow heart-in-mouth bends!!
A5289 Honister Pass:- As above!
A6 Shap:- How fast do you dare go? A very quick road that the cops average over 100mph on it!
A588 Poulton to Lancaster:- Come and have a go if you think your quick enough!

Can't think of any more. This is enough though. 8)

Following on from Stevierst's A686 do the:-
B6277 Alston to Middleton-in-Teesdale. Fast, twisty, smooth and hardly any traffic apart from other motorcyclists enjoying it.

Re: Best Biking Roads of Britain - Stradaman - 03-11-13

One of my favourites ( before it got to popular ) is the road from Helmsley to Stokesley road over North York Moors
Also the road from Keilder Water up thro to Jedburgh.
Yum Yum

Re: Best Biking Roads of Britain - esetest - 03-11-13

There are some great roads on my doorstep , anywhere around the chew valley , blagdon , cheddar gorge , the gorge through burrington , around the mendips - best time to do them is during the long summer evenings when they're quiet .
A bit further out , Some stretches of the Old London Road , the road between Petty France and Cirencester .
From what I can remember of Scotland , the road through Glencoe was good , the A87 up past Lochness , I think its the A9 the road from Inverness to John o Groats  ,and  the road from Bewley to Nessie land

Bealach Na Bà - the road to applecross.

got to be way up there IMO. after all, not many roads in scotland carry a warning like this:

A82 Dumbarton (Glasgow) to Inverness

Re: Best Biking Roads of Britain - robby boy - 03-11-13

+1 on Glencoe also good are A93 Glenshee, Fort William to Aviemore, and anywhere West of Inverness.

Re: Best Biking Roads of Britain - nick crisp - 03-11-13

Local to me, B4437 from the A361 to the A44 (part of the so-called "Charlbury TT - very twisty, up and down, tight, challenging), A44 from Woodstock to Moreton-in-Marsh (fast and winding, rises and falls with the landscape), also A361 from Banbury to Daventry.

Erm, that would be a good trick because the A272 doesn't go through Alton! But if you take the A32 southbound to Loomies, then you can pick up the A272 Smile

What about your favourites Bill? I know you like the A44 at your end (and I can vouch for it too), what else have you got around there?

Re: Best Biking Roads of Britain - lew600fazer - 05-11-13

Antrim coast road from Larne all the way to Ballycastle, or up over Torr head, for spectacular scenery. Head for Dundrod for a blast round the UGP road circuit, quick two laps round there and get the hell out of there quick before the police arrive.
Run over the Denbigh moors road and drop down onto the A5 to Betwys Coed . A5 to the A491 through Ruthin heading for the Ponderosa and the Horseshoe pass down into Llangaollen
