Fuel tank leaks from one of 2 hoses - Torque - 10-10-13 Hello, I've got issue with fuel leaking constantly from one of the 2 hoses that are going from the bottom of fuel tank. Basically how it started. One day I've noticed that fuel is going from the fuel cap, there was really high pressure in the tank, because when I've opened it I had petrol spread on my face ![]() When I've closed it back, after 10 minutes there was leak again, I thought I will go for a ride, because it was warm day and I've thought that I've overfilled my bike (but it was already after 50 miles done on tank). After 70 mile trip (Cheddar Gorge, really nice area) I've left my bike overnight and everything was fine, no leaks (because not much fuel left I think). Next day morning I've realized I could block one of the hoses when was removing fuel tank, so I've checked that and yes, one of the hoses was blocked. Today I've fueled my bike and after 19 miles of commuting I've left my bike in front of my office. Fuel was slowly spreading on the ground for all the day, till guard told me about issue. I've capped one of the leaking pipes (there is something going down from bottom of carbureator that fit's the size of hose and blocks it ![]() I've downloaded service manual and checked if I could overfuel my bike and that's true, but after doing about 30 miles fuel level was below the highest level that service manual says to not exceed. When I've uncapped previously capped hose it's leaking constantly with dots each few seconds. Both of them seems to be unblocked (yes I've used my lungs to check that). 1. What could be the issue? 2. Can I ride with capped one of the leaking hoses? 3. If not how can I repair? It seems that something is broken inside of fuel tank? 4. Where can I read how it works? Service manual does not say anything about that. I've got a feeling that I had blocked breath hose, so the pressure from the tank was going through the cap. Now when I've unblocked the breath hose, I've got leaks from drown/overflow hose, so I've capped it. ... but I am still not exactly sure how it works. Re: Fuel tank leaks from one of 2 hoses - lincs1963 - 11-10-13 It sounds as though you are talking about a carb overflow pipe here. Seems as though you may be experiencing a sticking float. That is assuming that we are looking at a carb fed bike. Re: Fuel tank leaks from one of 2 hoses - Dead Eye - 11-10-13 Sounds like the issue I had. The overflow goes from the filler cap through a metal pipe to the bottom of the tank - if this metal pipe has become corroded then it will leak fuel out and down the overflow hose at the bottom. As such, when your tank level is low, you do not have the problem. In my case, I could only half fill the tank otherwise fuel would start to leak out. My resolution was a new tank... It could be something else, which I'll leave for others to potentially expand on, but in my opinion the above is the issue. You shouldn't ride with the hose capped ideally, but its better than having fuel dripping on to a hot engine / exhaust. However, try to only put a 1 or 2 gallons of fuel in instead of filling the tank completely. It will certainly be a pain, but its better than pissing it over the floor Re: Fuel tank leaks from one of 2 hoses - Deefer666 - 11-10-13 You need to identify where exactly the hose is, if its carb overflow pipe then its a carb strip, clean and rebuild, if its a hose from the bottom of the tank then yes its a corroded internal overflow pipe which will mean a new tank. Re: Fuel tank leaks from one of 2 hoses - Fazerider - 11-10-13 I'm with Dead Eye on this. There are two pipes passing through the tank: one is the breather and the other is a drain for rainwater that can get collected by the filler cap area. Since you've blocked one and not mentioned any further problems with tank pressurisation it sounds like the drain pipe is the one that has perforated inside the tank. Yes, you can run it like that for a while, but the tank will accumulate rainwater so best to park it under cover until you can get a new tank. That makes sense right now. I will try to find a tank in my red color (maybe from the newer FZS, because its nicer and bigger?). BTW. What does it mean? Quote:I'm with Dead Eye on this. It would allow a better resolution of the problem. Re: Fuel tank leaks from one of 2 hoses - Fraser - 12-10-13 Hi, I had the exact same problem, it was the water drain metal pipe that passes through the tank, it had rotted out inside so every time I refuelled with more than 10 litres, it dripped out of the rubber drain pipe, Obvious solution is to change the tank that is in better condition than your own 10 year old tank !! IF YOU CAN FIND ONE, I had to settle for a bodge job, blanked off the rubber pipe on bottom of tank and sealed off the hole at top of tank with araldite, not the best solution but its kept me on the road for the last 6 months, I also always keep my tankbag on to help stop any rainwater accumulating under the filler cap, Fraser Re: Fuel tank leaks from one of 2 hoses - unfazed - 12-10-13 If what Fraser describes is the problem and the tank is in good condition, then Torque theres is a solution. ![]() Cut a large hole in the base of the tank around where the pipes exit and replace the damaged part of the pipe with a new piece either welded or brazed in place The biggest problem with carring out this repair is cleaning out the tank since petrol fumes are so highly explosive. I have seen this type of repair done by our local panel beater/spray painter on old bikes which are being restored and tanks are difficult to source. Whereas I have not seen it done on a fazer tank it would be a similiar procedure. Cutting the base usually prevents having to respray the full tank just the base where it would not be necessary to have the pain match perfect. Blocking the hole as Fraser has done is certainly a workable solution abeit a short term one. This is becoming more of a problem as the models age and any tank you buy could end up with the same problem. Bikes garaged or covered when idle as less prone to the problem. |
