i moan about this gen one v gen 2 business more than anyone, its one off them eternal arguments that nobody can win. ive owned both, they are both blinding bikes. when i first got my gen 2 i bitched about it being expensive to tune. but you know what? i was wrong..
its cheaper.
therefore, better.
my thinking is this. you get a gen one, you wanna make it handle, you gotta fork out (ho ho)for an r1 front end an a r6 rear shock. pay extra to do thefront properly or you will upset the geometry. then you want it to go, so you get a can and get it ivanised. how much is that, done properly? £250ish? if your lucky your heavy old bike is now making 135 brake. and if you wanna sell you gotta leave your now expensive carbs onnit and either sell it with the suspendy bits on when most people are too daft to reralise how good a bike it is, or take the bits off with all the pissing about that involves.so you end up keeping it and spend your weekends fettling rusty old exup valves or dodgy camchain tensioners etc..

or, you buy a gen 2. it already has an r1 front end, factory fitted. it already has a decent shock. nothing to spend on handling. how much has that saved? you wanna tune it?airbox mod is free. as is whipping the secondaries out, disabling the o2 sensor and drilling out the cat. you buy a secondhand carbon can and pc3, plentily available, (mine was £102 and £130 repectively), and suddenly your lightweight beastie is knocking on for 150 bhp and more fun than any bike youve had for years. no buggering about with exhaust valves, that went with the ugly oe can. and if you do decide to sell it(youd havta be mad, mines going nowhere), you sell the pc3 and can for what you paid for it and bike is back to stock in..ooooh..seconds..
so thats it. no discussion or argument to be had, the gen two rules supreme. now that thats out of the way, did you all have a good weekend?

But your gen 2 cost you probably at least £1500 more to buy in the first place, and have you been touring on it yet?

sorry to hear that m8 but it did look the nuts :lol as for the suzuki its a great bike for touring but its got no soul if you know what i mean?so its up for sale and im gonna try a gen 1.

Just a couple more points.
In a top gear roll on from about 70/80 ish last night, Slimwilly's gen 2 maybe edged mine ever so slightly, although both bikes weren't coming on cam yet. (I've probably given Bill some ammunition there, but everyone knows he's mad! :lol ). Both bikes have had the regular tuning mods.
Also Ogri, you've got the CB13 when you need a comfy distance bike. But what if, like me, you could only have the one bike?
Yes, I'd like the lighter weight and better suspension of the gen 2, but at what price? If I wanted outright performance as a priority, I probably wouldn't have either. And upgrading to R1/R6 bits is at least something I can do bit by bit, as the readies become available. Even if I could have afforded a gen 2 instead, I think I would still have taken a gen 1, just a lower mileage one. (Here's me justifying it to myself now, but it works!) And frankly, I don't think I could handle more performance than I've now got, even if the bike could. If on the other hand, the gen 2 had stacks more mid range than mine, it'd be a closer call, but meanwhile, we can both drop a gear if the need is felt!
You're right, no one will ever win this "argument", but there again, if you have either bike, they're both so good, I don't think you need to.

To be honest, the overwhelming issue for me would be the tank range on the gen 2. If it wasn't for that, then I'd have absolutely no issue with them at all!
Although that said, the suspension still isn't great on them, and they've got even less ground clearance than the gen 1 which REALLY winds me up every time I take my dads out!

Ha, had you on the hook for awhile there though mate..... Your absolutely right of course. If I could only have the one it would be without a doubt the gen 1. I'm a self employed brickie, so my fortunes change with the wind, been off work coz of me shoulder op so the busas hadta go, if I don't start earning regular soon the cb will too. And if by next summer I still haven't healed properly and things are still tight then the gen 2 will go so I can get a missus and touring friendly gen 1. The fuel range does piss me off..it's better now it's tuned but it's still a two fuel ups a day job on a 160 mile round trip. Gotta admit if I was flush I'd have that sorted gen one that's going for three grand, how could you not, dunno why nobody here ain't jumped on that.

Funny enough just looked in the busa forum and Neil (Dillon) is saying about how the busa gen one and two owners are turning on each other (in a good natured way, the same as here) now that the new zzr1400 is definitely king of the uber bikes. I added my bit..

I test rode the new zzr 1400 knowing full well I couldn't afford one before I bought my bus, it's phenonemal, traction control and ABS plus the most astounding engine ever put into a motorbike. But does it matter? Does that make it a better bike to own. Ienjoy riding my fz1 far more than I did my busa, mostly because after years of big bikes I got pissed off trying to haul all that mass up going hard into corners, especially two up. The fazer is like a 1000 cc super motard after riding the hayabusa, just easy, sit up and comfy worry free squirt and point fun. I honestly would not swap it for the far superior kwack. It's funny how the best bike in the world is the one that suits you best for whatever you want out of it, no matter what is available. One unbelievably hot Sunday last summer I rode me Fatbob to sunny honey in t shirt and jeans past miles of gridlocked traffic. When I got there I blasted up and down feeling like the coolest bloke on the planet. On that one day that Harley was the best bike in the world by a country mile. The rest of the year it was pretty much shite... "

Unfortunately, you can't have it in fastest yellow, even if you wanted to, as my information is that Yamaha only commissioned (that's my word of the day, that is...in fact I'll say it again - commissioned - there, that's better! :lol )........where was I? Oh yeah, they only commissioned (

Aw heck, it's only money! I've been paying off loans for bikes for most of my life, it hasn't killed me yet. Just make sure you can still keep a roof over your head and food in your belly (you kinda get used to rice and beans after awhile! :lol ). Oh, and you'll need to put some petrol in the tank now and again! :lol :lol
