Speeding through villages/towns - stupidamerican - 25-09-13

Forgive my ignorance.

What is the general rule of thumb for traveling through small towns/villages? I know in most places the post speed limit is 30mph but it seems to me most people travel at 40mph instead. I've had plenty of cagers riding my bumper or back tyre when I was traveling the speed limit in town.

Is there a gentleman's agreement I don't know about or are these people traveling too fast?

I find it amazing even in the countryside how many different towns and villages pop up here and there.

Thanks
Clayton

If you don't want a ticket 30 means 30 !!
Plenty of people ignore the town/village limits I know so if you are getting tailgated move over and wave them pass. You get some real funny looks from car drivers when you do that and as soon as the limit allows sweep past them at warp factor 4 Smile

Re: Speeding through villages/towns - Streetbudgie - 25-09-13

I only ever go through villages and towns on full throttle, I only change down to pull wheelies outside schools and hospitals.

It's idiots like Streetbudgie (it's ok pal, I know you were taking the Michael...) that get bikers a bad name. For me, 30 limits are just that, more so through sleepy little villages, because they'll complain the loudest, and create more tendencies amongst the rule makers to legislate against bikes. 40s a bit more relaxed, for me, same with 50 (depending very much on the road here), but nsl sign means glf....

I make sure I can stop at the distance that I can see. That goes for both the road, and the area around (if a view to the sides is blocked and some kid can run in front of my bike, I go extra slow). So sometimes under the speed limit, sometimes 2 or 3 times the speed limit. Depending on the situation/conditions.

I just make sure to keep it quiet through residential areas, near hospitals etc.

My rule is simple.
20 30 and 40 are gospel.
50 and national are up to you.
BUT
Any time you break it you risk points

Ride at 28 in the 30, then wave the tailgating twat past just before the speed camera  Smile

Agreed, apart from the 20's we now have in London which are just retarded!

Or as good ol' Jack Burton says ' I only drive as fast as I can see, and besides, its all in the reflexes!'

Re: Speeding through villages/towns - stupidamerican - 25-09-13

Great!

Now I can do some wheelies and burnouts in any village near you!  Big Grin

Thanks for the advice. I figured 30 means 30. I've just had a lot of cars riding my arse doing 30mph. I've even had a few fellow bikers blow me by when out in the country doing 60mph. I know I'm a little older than some squid type riders but I didn't think I was going that slow.

Generally I don't worry about how other people ride but I didn't want to break riding etiquette either.

I think the Fazer attracts a little older rider (no offense tended but usually true I find).

Most of the time I ride pretty cautious (sometimes slow) especially when line of sight is limited.

Thanks

50 is also gospel for me, but I wish those in power could set the right limits for the right areas.

My mrs' parents live on the A478 in Wales on a sweeping left hand bend. The limit is 60, but if you're going any faster than 50 you won't have time to react if we're pulling out of their drive. I've had a few near misses with bikes opening it up out of the village, which has a 50 limit until 100 yards before their house.  :rolleyes

Re: Speeding through villages/towns - Hamos - 25-09-13

Durham police had a good system.  Lots of national limit roads broken up with 30 villages.  They would stop bikes in the 30 limits and have a chat.  They said, "we know you are going to do 80 odd in the national areas, and so long as you are careful and don't take the piss, then we'll not get upset with that.  The 30s and 40s we will nail you if you go over."

This was fair and they were true to their word.  If you were a dick going over 100 they would get you, but if making progress and not being an idiot, if you happend to stray to 80 they were not bothered.  They were not trying to stop people enjoying the roads, just stick to the 30s etc.  When they are fair and sensible like that you take more notice of the limits.

I stick to the 30s 40s etc, then makemy own mind up for the rest.

This kind of makes me question whether biking is really for me.  I'd rather keep my arse  as a one way passage and as for being blown by other bikers  :eek . Well each to their own

Re: Speeding through villages/towns - esetest - 25-09-13

Just watch out for the scamera vans , those points soon add up .

Re: Speeding through villages/towns - stevierst - 25-09-13

Just remember, it's a limit, not a target!

20, 30, 40 stick to it or below, even 50 depending on the area. Nationals are "take your chance" roads.

If you get caught breaking it, take it on the chin, but be prepared to watch the speed limit drop on that stretch of road in the near future. That's what they're doing on some awesome roads round where I live.

Re: Speeding through villages/towns - bri h - 25-09-13

havin stumped up 86 quid to do the drivers awareness course and avoid 3 points on my licence i know the police are looking to catch people doin up to 40 in a 30 limit as there the ones the course is aimed at. it turns out that if you hit someone at 30 there realy is an 80% chance they will live. of course if your goin fast enough to kill yourself then your another unwanted statistic.

Re: Speeding through villages/towns - Grahamm - 25-09-13

I've seen idiots doing 45 in a 30 limit and 100mph in a National Limit.

If you want to do that, fine, it's your choice, but don't expect me to follow you. (And do expect me to laugh when you get nicked...!)
