Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 16-09-13 After giving me FCE a week or so to get the feel of it, Had a great evening in the garage on me fz1 tonight....picked up a pc3 the other week for £132 on eBay. Tonight I modded me airbox, disconnected me O2 sensor and removed the secondary butterflies(heard some right horror stories about getting the screws out but a decent right sized driver and plenty of concentrated heat of me leister gun and it was a piece of piss) then fitted the pc3. Yesterday on the bay again I got a carbon bos slip on for £102, ( still want a yoshi but money is tight) hopefully it will be here tomorrow, just gotta de cat the manifold and de cable the exhaust valve before I fit it. Pc3 came of a bike with similar spec so it should be ok, but I'll get brew at BSD to do a custom map, hopefully it will be knocking on the door of 145-150 brake. Couldn't help but try it tonight with just the induction mods and power commander...lovely snarl under the tank and it finally is starting to feel like the flat barred r1 I wanted when I bought it... I take back what I said about gen 2s being pricy to tune, it's a helluva bike.
Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - Falcon 269 - 17-09-13 Nice one, mate. ![]() Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - slimwilly - 17-09-13 Good going, are you leaving the secondries out? i just trimmed mine, also the O2 censor ,i just unplugged as suggested and left the cable off, seems to work a treat. I did the same as you with the second hand pc3, it came with a custom map ,same bike, and i just left it in,,it seems bloody marvelous, i might get to trying other maps one day,,but there seems no need. Good flying Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 17-09-13 Cheers guys. Yeah thought about trimming them but brew ( BSD engineering) said whip em out completely, and the bloke I bought the pc3 off had removed his completely too. Doesn't Bog or anything else adverse so seems ok. The induction roar alone was worthnit lol. Itching to take it out but gonna wait for the can. It's a lovely bike to work on innit? Put together like a Swiss watch. I do love yamahas build quality, and the fz1s minimalist approach. Whilst the gen 1 is easily the better all rounder, the fz1 has a purity of purpose and design I'm really coming to love. Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - stevierst - 17-09-13 I did the same with mine, but trimmed the flies to keep a bit more bottom end torque. The bike is an animal with the right map! You don't have to go and get a custom map, you can simply download the map pack zip file from the fz1oa site. I've had some good fun playing with the maps, and got about 7 on my juicebox pro that all have slightly different characteristics. It'll certainly save you a few hundred £, and you can say "i did that" ! Just watch your licence after you've done it ![]() Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - stevierst - 17-09-13 I've found a link to getting the map pack if anyone is interested. http://www.mediafire.com/download/f61307ab86fh8qy/FZ_1_Map_Pack.zip There's loads of maps on here for all different levels of tune and riding style. I've used about 6 or 7 of these maps, and they all work well, depends on your mods! Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 17-09-13 does trimming and re installing the flies make a noticable difference mate? it seems ok low down, but i'll put them back in if it gives it even more grunt. The Americans are the leaders in tuning these bikes, and I looked on both the USA Fazer sites asking the same question. There were quite a few guys who removed the flies, but found out that some of the bikes bog down slightly (probably a poor map). These guys replaced the flies with trimmed ones saying the bike had more usable bottom end, but slightly less top end. I suppose it depends on your riding style, and what you want from the bike. I prefer to have a bit more bottom end for UK roads, as it's rare I go to the redline. (who the hell does???) If your a track hacker, then bin the flies and get an aggressive map. If you've a bit of engineering skill, it's an absolute doddle to make your own smaller flies. 2mm aluminium plate, tin snips, a file, and a drill is all you need. Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 17-09-13 cheers mate. making them is not a problem, and im no track day hero, so bottom end always wins out over top for me. i guess i'll just make some and give em a try, its all good fun in the garage innit? ![]() ![]() Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - stevierst - 17-09-13 No probs. It's always good fun to have a play with your bike and get it to improve. Try a few of the maps from the zip pack and see what works for you. I downloaded about 7 maps onto mine, then just went out and tried them. Recorded my findings, and settled with the "whittlebeast smoothed and averaged map stage 3". It's smoother than freshly shaved ladybits and powerful from 3k to the bloodline. (also returns 40ish mpg even ridden quickly) Enjoy your playing bud! Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 17-09-13 Well, the cats dead, I'm much more of a dog person... Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 17-09-13 Interestingly, the last photo shows why I gotta tune on the cheap. Them sportsmaxes are the originals, meaning although they have shitloads of tread after just 2k miles, they are totally useless being four years old, it's like they are Teflon coated, I cannot get anywhere near the edge on em and have spent the last few weeks since I got it sliding around norwich like bloody torville and dean...a new set of pirellis is pretty much crucial and well overdue. :eek Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - Bracechenko - 17-09-13 I have those same mods but with a Mivv Ghibli can (baffle still on), K&N and custom map built. Mine puts out 138hp at the wheel and the torque and power curves are as smooth as you'd ever want - the bike is a dream to ride, so smooooooooth but an animal after 7,000rpm ![]() Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 17-09-13 Yup I'd be happy with that mate. ![]() Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - Fazer TIM - 17-09-13 GOOD JOB so far mate ive read up on the no flies/smaller flies and lots say it bogs, I have got ivans smaller ones ready to install when I do the airbox mod. Im running a dynojet map in mine atm only mods are pcv and yosh end can. 141.8 rwhp Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 18-09-13 Cheers tim. Mine doesn't bog or fluff but if there's more low/ mid to be had at the sacrifice of top end i never use its gotta be worth a punt, picked up some sheet today gonna make and fit some smaller ones tonight, try em tomorrow. Bos end can turned up, mint condition and looks pukka with the stealth bracket instead of a strap. Absolute Bargain for a carbon slip on..£102, bid on loads of more modern looking angular ones but they keep making stupid money, guess not many people want the old school ovals so much now.Fitted it and anything over tickover bike just fucks off like the millennium falcon now... ![]() Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - Fazer TIM - 18-09-13 looks good mate :lol :lol Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - ogri48 - 18-09-13 Cheers dude. You gotta get your airbox mod done tim, it's worth it for the induction snarl alone:-) made me smaller secondaries tonight...stock ones were dull and frankly rough as a badgers arse, obviously any part of the motah with air flowing over or through it wants to be smooth so once I'd drilled and cut em I wet and dried em working through 240/400/600/1000/1500 finishing on 2000 so there niiiice and smooth like. Be interesting to see if I can feel a difference tomorrow. No idea if I've took too much off/ left too much on but it worked okay with full ones/none at all so i reckon it's gotta be cushty ![]() Re: Tuning on the cheap.. - Fazer TIM - 18-09-13 they look pretty good size wise . im gonna do mine as soon as I can get time ![]() |
