Restoraion - Wootan - 11-09-13

Hi All,
Thought I best introduce myself as no doubt I will be asking for some help before too long. I'm not sure how I ended up in this position but I have effectively been given my Uncle's Fazer. It's a 2001 FZS600 with 16k on the clock. Before you all start calling me lucky it has a bit of a sting in tail. He has owned the bike for around ten years but it hasn't moved for more than a year; in itself this wouldn't be a problem except it was parked outside his house which is 20yds from the beach in Brighton. It's fair to say its seen better days. A breaker offered him £150 but I hate to see things scrapped so I've been talked into a full restoration. I've done classic cars before but not bikes so should be interesting.
I'll try and post some pictures later, I've started tearing it down so the frame can be powder coated, the engine is out and looks shocking; to be honest I can't believe it still ran but after a year of standing a bit of fresh petrol and a charged battery and it fired up first time!
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks
Paul

Re: Restoraion - Punkstig - 11-09-13

All of us on here know the black engine paint on the 600's is shocking to say the least so that wouldn't put any of us off!
Nice to know its getting a full strip down and rebuild.

Thanks for the support.
Here are a couple of pics so you can see the scale of the problem. Assuming it works obviously!

Nearly

Re: Restoraion - Chris - 11-09-13

That should all clean up without too much bother. wire brush some sand paper and a spray can of high temp paint will have the engine looking like new in no time.

Need a new chain by the looks of that one, discs might be salvageable but I imagine the calipers will need rebuilt with new seals etc.

Will be a good project and will look sweet when it's done. Plenty spare parts in the classifieds section on here plus loads on ebay too.

Re: Restoraion - reillypadraig - 11-09-13

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents here, I had to do a half rebuild on mine, bought it with new engine hanging in the frame by 2 bolts and had to strip front rear, Swingarm clutch and wiring was nackerd amoungst other serious carb problems, rusted frame etc etc,
Any probs you have just throw them up, lots guys on here that know their Fazers inside out so this was the right place to come,

If you need parts just ask,
I have a full engine sitting up( the old one was given to me but cylinder 3 is fried, all other parts are in good enough nik, plus I have 2 sets of carbs, but none complete but if you need certain small bits I can help.

Good to see that restoration is being done on these and not scraped. Good project!!

Re: Restoraion - Wootan - 12-09-13

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the support, a couple more pictures for you. The carb rubbers were rotten through and a fair bit of debris has gone down the inlet ports, I was planning on taking the head off check through everything so not a complete disaster.

Re: Restoraion - Punkstig - 12-09-13

Doesn't look like it has the front sprocket nut issue in fairness!  :lol

Evenin All.
Nearly there now, just the front end and swing arm to come off. Trying to decide on colour combination any suggestion for frame, swing arm and fairings?

Re: Restoraion - elbrownos - 19-09-13

Good thing it's got stainless downpipes, the originals would have rusted away to nothing

Re: Restoraion - Chris - 19-09-13

Great progress man!

As for colours then everyone will just suggest the same colour as their own bike (because everyone thinks their colour is the fastest... haha) I do love the origonal yamaha colour of deep purplish blue metallic cocktail, same as my foxeye but got for something completely different. I always think the fazers shape lends itself well to a strip of different colour down the middle. the tank has the raised centre section, the tail unit has the centre section and the front can easily be seperated between the lights or whatever. Go on give it a racing stripe then it'll be super fast. haha.

I had my wheels done gloss black and think it looks much nicer than the standard satin black too as they never looked clean and shiney to me.

Keep us updated!

Chris

Re: Restoraion - Dead Eye - 19-09-13

I'm never sure with the colours - I can't honestly say I "like" the blue of my bike... but it isn't the same as the later Foxeyes which do look a lot nicer.

I still like the deeper red of the early Boxeyes

But, so far, its the "Lava Red" scheme you get on the Gen1 thou's that I like the most ^^

Re: Restoraion - Buzz - 20-09-13

Re: Restoraion - Wootan - 20-09-13

Dead Eye, that is exactly the colour at the top of my list. I had an Elise in a very similar colour and always liked it. Cant decide whether to go with gun metal frame and swing arm or keep it  black.
