Michelin Tyre Recall (not current) - nick crisp - 12-08-13

A few years back in the bike shop I was working in at the time, we got a recall notice regarding a specific model of tyre. Now, it was probably about 4 or 5 years ago, so before you start panicking, you probably don't have this problem now.
However, on arriving home from work today, I just noticed a thin, slightly uneven line running all the way around my rear tyre, a little off-centre. If I run my finger nail across it, I can just feel it. The line is a little darker than all the rest of the tyre surface. On checking the front tyre, I found exactly the same thing. Now, I would probably have dismissed it as nothing but for the memory it jogged of the aforementioned recall for a problem that started with just such an anomaly appearing. I think it was a Michelin tyre that the notice went out on. 70% sure anyway. I also think it was not PR2s, which is what I've got on there now. Again, maybe 70% sure. But what I do remember is that it pointed to a weakness or manufacturing fault in the tyre in question, maybe only certain production batches, again can't be sure of that, but it was of sufficient concern for the manufacturer to issue the recall notice.
Does anyone out there remember such an issue, did it affect you, did you receive a recall on your tyres for this reason? For now, I'm just going to keep a close eye on it, maybe it won't be anything to worry about.

Don't know anything about what causing it, but noticed same thing on a couple of friends bikes recently - either completely nothing to worry about and normal, or a  very big batch that's gone wrong (dunno what tyres they were on)

I have the line on my pr2s that were bought late last summer

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for Rich, and very probably there isn't anything to worry about. Sometimes that's the problem with working in the bike trade - you find out a little more than you really want to know! :\

Hence "not current" and "before you start panicking"... :rolleyes

IIRC that Michelin recall was because of tyres de-laminating (tread peeling off), forget the exact tyres now.

:lol
No, I know bugger all about computers! (I'm slowly getting there).
Thanks for that link tho, where that tyre example shown has peeled does not seem to fit with the line that's appeared on my tyre, so all should be well. However, I believe my memory is deteriorating! :\

From the Michelin technical guys, .
Anti Static strip

When a motorcycle is in use there is a build up of static within the machine. It is necessary to ensure that this is dispersed during usage.
In order to facilitate this there is a carbon black strip built into the tyre during manufacture. This strip is moulded into the tyre before curing using carbon, as this is a good conductor of static electricity. This strip is practically invisible on a new tyre, but can appear as the tyre wears, especially if the usage of the motorcycle is not high. There is no detrimental effect on the performance of the tyre either before, during or after this strip has become apparent. The positioning of this strip is slightly ‘off centre’
