Fazer running to lean ? - Anarch - 31-07-13
Hi all,
I've got K&N air filter and Blue flame exhaust - I've been told by my mechanic that there is a slight chance that with both of those that my bike might be running to lean and can overheat (and die). On the other hand I've read on this forum that Fazers normally run a bit rich - so that combination should be ok.
So what do you guys think - should I be worried, or not ?

Never heard anyone else mention any issues, and i'm sure you're not the only person with that combination!

I just got a bit paranoid when I was idling the engine for a few minutes and my fan switched on (for the 2nd time in 4 years).

Have you ever done a proper Radflush before, maybe your waterways are a little clogged up and your coolant's not circulating freely enough?

Nope I haven't - but I try to change the coolant ever three years (done it last month). So hopefully there shouldn't be any build up.

You're talking about a kettle on wheels, it's not about being hopeful, it's just a matter of fact things clog up eventually after a while, and you are talking years.
I would seriously suggest giving it the Radflush treatment.

The FZS600 runs rich as standard, with my old FZS600 I got a K&N, Stainless Downpipes and a Beowulf without the baffle (straight through) It ran tons better and had a far better smell from the exhaust (much better fuel mix). It also meant I got near 60mpg if ridden sensibly on a commute (was doing 50-55 before the mods)
It ran like this for me for 35,000 miles with no bother - obviously doing oil changes every 4k.

I put a Motad set of stainless steel downpipes on mine.
The Motad replacement header system outlet pipe is has a clear open area of 1364sqm. Whereas the original outlet is restricted to somewhere between 962sqm and 1075sqm.
When I fitted the Motad headers the power band almost evaporated and a gas analyser showed it be running far too weak, this being supported by the plug colour.
A further test was done by a lazer temp gauge on the exhaust clamp bracket of both original and new pipes and this showed the exhaust gas temp had risen.
To solve the issue the Motad pipe was sleeved down first to 1075sqm which improved things no end, and finally down to 975sqm, which seems to be better.
Plugs were checked and exhaust gas analysed and the results were as good as I could get them.
