TPS - How Does It Work? - nick crisp - 14-07-13

It has been suggested to me that if I disconnect my TPS then ride the bike, if my little stutter doesn't stop then it's not TPS related (makes sense). However, before I try this I want to know exactly what function it has (apart from obvious " senses the throttle position!). How does the bike make use of the information it receives from the sensor - in short what it does and how it does it. If you can just disconnect it and still ride, surely it does not have a critical function? (Can't believe this could be right, or why have it in the first place). Are there any sources where I can read up on this? Ta for any help on this.

TPS determines the position of the throttle plates and the rate at which they're opening or closing.  That much is simple.

The information it provides to the ECU is taken in conjunction with gear and rpm to determine the ignition map and the EXUP positioning.  That's not so simple.

I believe that disconnecting the TPS makes the ECU default to a basic pre-set map for ignition and EXUP, most probably based on just gear and rpm alone.  I could be wrong, though. Smile

The reason I suggested disconnecting it was to eliminate the possibility of false signals from a faulty TPS from causing your ECU to set inappropriate or randomly changing values which might - stress, might - cause the stutter you're experiencing.

To be honest, I don't think the TPS is at fault but by getting you to disconnect it, I was hoping to set your mind at rest on that.

Actually Mike, I didn't want to keep pestering you about it, hence the post on here - but always glad of an opportunity to learn more!  Smile  Have since read back on some previous threads and am slowly coming around to your way of thinking, ie plugs/caps/HT connection. I bet you're thinking "why doesn't the silly sod just take it somewhere and get it sorted" - I will, I will, just gotta ride it a little more first! Lovely evening cool-off ride just now, but I wish they'd stop covering everything with gravel!  Smile Smile

I don't mind being asked questions, Nick, if it helps clarify something. Smile

Mike must be one of the most pestered guys on here  :b
But he seems to be used to it as a side effect of being so damn knowledgeable on the gen 1.
One day one of us will win big on the loto and hire him a couple of scantily clad women to clean his bike as a reward I'm sure Smile

The fact that I can no longer work on my own bike is very frustrating, but I still can't help my curiosity. If there's a reason something behaves in a certain way, I always want to know why, although it may turn out to be beyond my understanding. Nevertheless, I'll usually worry at it until I can get no further  :wall  :lol
I'd hire you a couple of scantily clad women Mike, but you'd probably get them after I've figured out what makes them work... :lol

If you can figure out how women work, Nick, you're a better man than me :lol

Yes, you're probably right... :wall :wall :wall :wall :'( :'( :'( :'(
