Quick action throttle - JoeRock - 24-06-13

Anyone know of one available for the FZS 600?
Have had one from another bike on all my bikes so far (the hornet 6 I put an SP2 tube on, the ZX9R a ZX10R tube on etc), so was wondering if there was a common mod for these bikes too? Its extremely annoying having to shuffle my wrist slightly to fully open the throttle, I'd much rather something I can just twist a bit and have it whacked fully open, 1/5 or 1/6 turn, as compared to whatever the Fazers standard one is!

You can make your own out of some plastic plumbing pipe, done it on a few bikes.
Take off the throttle tube, and cut a piece of plastic pipe as wide as the cable track, trim it to size, glue it on, and voilla, roughly 1/4 turn throttle.

There are some sceptical Tiger riders out there, not one of the 'commenters' fitted the mod! :rolleyes  Those that fitted it said it was good.

A 1/4 turn throttle is what is needed, and it's easy to do. Done a few before with no problems at all.
Here's how I did mine.
Tools needed:-
Phillips screwdriver.
10mm and 8mm spanner.
Hacksaw
stanley knife
Araldite or similar glue.
medium grit sandpaper.
35mm UPVC plumbing pipe.

Stage 1, removing the throttle tube. loosen the cable adjuster in front of the ignition barrel. Unscrew the two phillips heads screws from the throttle housing and remove. Split the housing and remove the cables. Remove the bar end weight and Slip off the throttle tube.

And here it is!

Stage 2, making the throttle spacer. You now need to get yourself some 35mm UPVC plumbing pipe. Mine was 2mm wall thickness, but there is plenty of room for much bigger. I cut a piece of pipe 1/8" wide or thereabouts with the hacksaw and sanded the burrs off. Cut a slot in the pipe so that it looks a bit like this.

Then trim the piping so that it fits snug onto the throttle housing with no gaps.

Once the fit is right, lightly score both the outside of the throttle body, and the inside of the pipe to give the glue something to grip to, and use an epoxy resin type glue such as Araldite to bond the piping in place. You can see in the photo that I made a little cutout guide for the cable to track along. Not really necessary with pipe this diameter, but I did it anyway.

Then leave it to dry. Once dry, trim off any excess glue from the end and inside the tube recess where the housing fits just to make sure it doesn't snag. You can use the stanley knife and sandpsper for this.

Stage 3, the refit
Refitting is just as easy as disassembly. Place the throttle tube on the bar, refit the cables, clamp the housing over the top and place the screws back in tight. Adjust the cable to your desired tension, refit the bar end and Voilla!! Instant 1/4 turn throttle! There is enough room in the housing for much thicker tubing to be used, which will further reduce the ammount of tube travel to give you full throttle, but that's up to you to experiment with it. I'm happy with this much turn, as will most of you.

No worries ponkster, just sharin the love! Just remember though, this 'how to' was for a tiger 1050. Won't be a massive difference for the ikkle fazer though, let us know how you get on.O0

Does doing this make low speed riding or riding in heavy traffic a bit awkward?

I didn't experience any problems on the tiger with this, and that's a REALLY torquey engine, so I'd say no with the fazer too.

No bud its spot on, you just ease it open.

For me, because the movement is smaller it feels more precise.

Fizzy, its 35mm upvc plumbing pipe. Pretty standard 2.5mm wall thickness. Trim a piece to fit your throttle tube so its snug with no gaps or overhangs, then glue it in place.
It just needs a little bit of filing/sanding to make it fit without fouling the tube housing.
I've used it on two bikes now and its superb free mod, My fz1 is getting done next weekend. Have a go and fit it, if you don't like it, then just remove it!
