Lubing Up!!!!!!! - noggythenog - 23-06-13

My missus says i need to use more lube............on my fazer of course! Wink
I've learned lots about the bike but i've neglected the bits and pieces :o & my plan is to give it a good old wash down and then clean the chain, get the sprocket cover off and clean out the gunk and then try to lube up every possible part.
Ive got plenty WD40 and copious ammounts of 3 in 1 oil with PTFE (not for the chain may i add ill use proper chain lube) to use up on something so the plan was to use the wd and a toothbrush to clean out all old gunky bits and then spray 3 in 1 on every hinge, moving part, nuts and bolts and the likes.
appreciate this may not be the best ever way but my feeling is that it is better than doing nothing & using up what i've got.
can anyone offer any advice on the matter, is it just a case of spray and clean whatever i can get my hands to or is there any particular parts that need special attention or specialist substances of much high value???
cheers. Nog!

I remember when I first took the front sprocket cover off a few months back and with the amount of chain lube build up, dirt, stones, dead snails / badgers, fallen off bandit parts etc in there I pretty much needed dynamite and a pneumatic drill to clear the worst of it out before I could even begin with the wd-40 and degreaser to make it all shiney. I would advise lots of old shirts / rags because at least 2 will be written off just in there alone.

Oh yeah and I took the opportunity while the left footpeg and gear selector were off to take all that apart and clean and regrease them. Felt a lot smoother and I didn,t realise but it had come loose at some point and was making changing gear not very nice, feels lovely now.

hey yama, i take it that it's a doddle to take these bits n bobs off is it?, i cant wait to look inside & i've been dying to use my jumbo box of special formula degreaser i got from costco, i knew i needed it for something. :b

:lol I love posts like this!
As I get older I can get away with more obsessive-compulsive behaviour re bike cleaning/maintenance-without being considered "a suitable case for treatment".
The bad news is it takes years apprenticeship to become a fully fledged cleaning expert(nerd?).
It will cost you dear in terms of tools/materials/rags/kitchen rolls/hand cleaners/relationships-However with the right approach you will develop a more intimate relationship with your pride & joy than you ever thought possible but be prepared for SWMBO outbursts along the lines of ..."You spend more time with/think more of /spend more on etc etc that f****n bike than ME".
After a 50plus year training course I  have my own approach to bike care-ALL OTHER DISTRACTIONS are now departed/dismissed.(Only the cats remain but theyre not the best assistants with limited attention span!) :lol
Requirements for position of Bike Cleaner Extraordinaire:-
Best set of tools both mechanical and power driven for buffing wheels/wire brushes etc.
Never ending supply of rag, paper roll, newspapers.
Half the annual production of the entire world chemical industry.
Severe OCD or a willingness to undergo suitable training.
HEALTH WARNING!: you may become less willing to actually ride the bike after all this investment of energy/money/time :'(

Personally I gave up WD40 about 15 years ago. Now my cupboards are graced with GT85, ACF50.....................
Halfords,Aldi,Lidl,Poundland & my local bike shop are all nominating me for customer of the year (I think that's what they said........Oh dear, here come the men in the white coats :eek
