Knocking Through Foot Pegs - Biggy461 - 20-06-13
Hello
I've got a lovely 98 FZS600 which I've had about 6 weeks now.
I've just started to notice a knocking through both foot pegs when the revs are at about 3 to 3.5k.
The knocking dissappears when you get past this or roll off the power or pull the clutch in.
The knocking is only really noticable when cruising at about 30mph through town, but not when your crusing at 60+ on the open road.
I've seen a few simlar posts which point at chain and sprocket but I wandered if it could be anything else before I splash the cash.
Bike has done 29000 miles, I've recently serviced and replaced wheel bearings front and back and the sprocket carrier bearing. Have no other service information so not sure when chain was replaced if it has at all.
Look forward to reading your thoughts

grip the chain on the rear sprocket and see if you can pull it away from the sprocket,ie is it loose on the teeth....also what position ar the chain adjusters in ?

Yeah as Red says check alignment of the wheel.
If you look at each lower chain link carefully, see if any are at a slight angle rather than all horizontal, if there are any your chain has stiff links and will need either serious attention or probable changing.

Had the same problem when i first bought my Fazer, 30mph cruising and i could feel knocking on my left foot peg, 60mph and over and i couldn't feel it anymore. turns out i had a tight spot and a few stiff links in my chain. no matter how much lubing and cleaning they wouldn't free up. ended up buying a new chain and sprocket kit and problem was sorted

I went to my local shop to check my chain knocking through the peg vibe, he had a look, there were no tight spots on the chain and the rollers were tight to the back sprocket.
He said don't worry about it....

Regardless of what matey said in the shop, the fact still remains you should not have knocking on your left foot!

Defo chain related issue. More than likely needs adjusted and or alignment done. Check front sprocket for ware, could be trying to jump a tooth.

Just taking a pragmatic approach to chain maintenance
My carbs have needed balancing since last year, it's OK over 2.5K revs!

i personally wouldn't feel safe riding the bike with that knocking knowing its either wheel or chain related.

Chain slap, usual cause of knocking. Happened a couple of times to me in past, just make sure you're chain is tight enough.

Thanks for the feedback peeps.
I've had a look at the chain and sprockets but couldnt see much wrong, but then being new to biking I'm not sure what im looking for really? Tightend the chain a bit as it was quite slack, took it for a ride and it was still there.
Also noticed a flat spot on the rear rim looks like it was done by a tire fitter :\ but sure thats not causing the issue as it stops when the clutch is in or the power is off.
What i did notice is the bearingy looking thing the clutch cable attaches to has a bit of play in it, not sure if thats normal.
Guessing its chain and sprocket change then.

I had a similar problem, one seized link, ending up putting on a new chain.
No matter what I tired could not get it to free up.

All it takes is that one link, which will seize at a slight angle going from bottom left up to top right as you look at the lower level of the chain, and every time it hits the front sprocket you'll feel it as a bump on your left foot.
It should be quite obvious to see compared to all the other horizontal links, and if you see a suspect link then use pliers and see if it moves freely like the rest of the chain links.
Once you've sussed out what you're looking out for they will stand out to you quite obviously in the future!

I get the knocking through both pegs, left and right so would this still point at the chain.

Hold on a minute, i just noticed you said it stops when the clutch is pulled in?
