Is it usual for the idle to increase as the bike gets hotter?

Yes, if it is set to the recommended idle speed when cold.
Idle speed should be set when the engine is at normal operating temperature and if set when cold it will increase when the engine reaches its normal operating temperature.
What is it increasing to?

When the engine is cold ie first starting its around 1000 but then when the engine is hot it's about 1200

Doesn't sound right to me - I'd expect idle speed to drop as it warms up, if anything.
Mine idles 1100-1200 cold, and about 900 warm (it's a tad low, I know), although there's no choke on mine. 1200-1300 is about right.

Started it up, on a dampish morning, no choke used, and i s'pose it ticked over for a minute between 1050 and 1100rpm.
Half a mile later it was sitting quite happily around the 1150rpm mark, then another half mile later it was rock solid at 1200rpm, around 5mins after initial start up and in slowish moving traffic.

Mine starts lower (900-1000) & rises to 1150-1200 as it reaches optimal temp.

Adie, I don't think the idle should drop when the bike gets up to optimum running temp

Same here, needs choke for a min though or it will die straight away.  I have noticed it rising slightly for some reason though to about 1400 after a long run.

Are we all talking about the same model? Injected models may well idle slightly faster when cold. Mine 03 fzs600 once started will idle with a little choke at about 1100 and within 30 secs idle about 1000 without choke but once fully warm will idle about 1150 ish.

Mine chokes and splutters when it starts and will attempt to idle somewhere between 900-1000 before dying unless I hold the throttle on slightly or use the choke (after about 30-60 seconds of holding the throttle though, otherwise it will die). Once its finally warm it will idle around the 1200 but its soo rough its a bit all over the place...

My engine is soo screwed up Tongue

I used half a bottle each in 2 full tanks of fuel, and had very noticeable results  :thumbup

Its already had a litre of the IPA stuff you recommended go through it and the carbs have been off and cleaned twice and balanced twice Tongue Its also had a replacement air filter and oil filter and two changes of oil (after it dumped most of it over the roads...)

Pretty sure it has some more significant issues Tongue

Kentish - not looking to sell it I'm afraid Tongue Looking to fix it - this engine just needs to last long enough for me to finish rebuilding the other one, then they will be swapped over and I can start on a full rebuild of this one Smile

IPA is more for getting water out of the tank, and lowering the freezing point of water in winter (carb icing).
The STP will clean carbon deposits off the internals, carbs, valves, etc.

Thats because your S2 is fuel injected. The fuel injection bikes and cars have a fuel enrichment system like the manual choke on the carburettors which causes the fuel injected bike to idle faster when cold and slowly drop to the operating temperature idle speed as the engine warms up.
Most people if they use the choke on a carburettor engine turn it off when the engine can tick over without stalling before it reaches it operating temperature and it would not have the optium fuel air mixture for a cool engine and idle lower, then when it reaches the normal operating temperature the idle increases as the fuel air mixture is correct.
Technically you bike has a choke but it is controlled by the electronics using the temperature sensors
