connecting running lights to sidelight ? - Enceladus - 01-06-13

got myself some of the led strip lights to use as running lights along with the sidelights.
thinking of mounting them on the radiator grille that i have.
is there an easy way of connecting them to the sidelight ?
thinking if cutting the wire and using a "chocolate block" plastic terminal at the moment but would value your input.

Im not sure on the specific wiring, but wouldnt a Scotchlok connector be more suitable for this?

Nooooooooo :eek Scotchloks are awful. You'd be better off finding somewhere you could piggyback an existing connection or using an alternate switched live via a third party feed module Smile

'Scotchlocks, the biggest cause of electrical fires known to man' to quote my mechanic buddy, personally I cut the sidelight wires and connector blocked the LEDs, leaving the original sidelights disconnected, I did this as the LEDs are brighter but draw less power than the original sidelights so don't need the originals 'on'!

Scotchblocks are OK if used correctly - i.e. very low ampage, such a signal feed to a relay. The problem is people use them to splice into headlamp leads to power spotlights so they're drawing 10amps through a tiny area of contact, which overheats...fire.

I have two small bullet led's that I've connected using crimped bullet connectors off the pilot light. Cut the positive, bind the two ends back together and crimp into the female side of the bullet connector. Crimp the positive lead of the LED lights into the male. Repeat with the negative leads. That way the lights are easily removable.

is there anywhere in the connection box under the tank i can take a feed from ?
want to keep the original sidelight in as well so i can return everything to standard if i want to sell the bike later on.

My side light is still in place and working. To remove the bullet lights all I need do is disconnect them at the connectors I put in the side light leads.

If you think your lights might draw too much current, then a relay and a fused feed from the battery might be a better idea. Take the signal for the relay from the positive side of the side light.

where abouts are the connectors please ?
don't think they will draw too much current.
2 strips of 18 led's

The connectors are about 8 inches back from the bulb holder. I just found a convenient place to work on them really.
