Any RAF types on here? - fireblake - 22-05-13
Hiya guys, I'm on holiday in the Lake District and keep seeing a couple of single engined planes over Coniston way and the Hard knott area and was just wondering what type of plane they are? They look like WW2 fighter planes and have RAF roundels on but aren't painted camouflage.
They look and sound fantastic. Do the RAF use this type of plane for training purposes, maybe the next one up from the basic starter plane before they go onto jets?

They're probably Tucanos, the RAF use them for low level flight training.
Hope you get to see some fast jets too. I was up there many years ago and it was a huge adrenaline rush watching a pair of Tornados howl past... especially if you've a good high vantage point and they're below you.

Yesterday I was at Ullswater and quite high up. Firstl a helicopter flew over the lake at a height of say 80 feet and about 10 minutes later a Tornado flew the other way, it was on its wingtip so we could see the underneath as it flew past. It was lower than us and looked amazing?

While I watched the 2 fly past 1 went straight on and the other peeled off and flew around a mountain. I was behind them and to see the plane swerve past the mountain on his wingtip was amazing.

I remember being on the ferry from Fort William and was right up at the front where they pulled the ramp up.
I HEARD the plane flying along the water, but couldnt see it since it was lower than my field of vison. often wondered if the pilot was actually fishing - they were that low.

Living in the Scottish Borders we see this sorta thing with low flying aircraft all the time.. I used to stay in a farm cottage and regularly got ornaments actually vibrating off the mantelpiece with low flying stuff, usually less than 80 feet above.. was so common even the sheep and cows didn't even lift their heads..
hada puma helicopter flying over the field behind the house one day at about 20 foot.. he had to lift to clear the telephone wires running across the field.. highly impressive.. I miss seeing the older Yank stuff though (F1-11, A10, F15) that used to come over.. they were always a fir bit higher though (200ft) they don't do low as well as the brits (A10 being the exceptions)

I've not seen Tornados, but many years ago when I lived in Bristol, I was near the top of Brandon Hill when there was some sort of Maritime Festival in the Floating Harbour and I got to see a Nimrod fly past below me!
