Tortoises - Streetbudgie - 14-05-13

Anyone know anything about Tortoises?

When I was a kid you bought one, stuck it in the garden and fed it cucumber when it was hungry then found it at the end of September and put it in a box in the shed until you woke it up when Blue Peter told you to in the Spring.

I'm guessing it isn't like that any more as I've seen mention of UV lights and terrariums etc?

Hahaha! Certainly applies to mine... It's taking its sweet time to wake up too! haha.

Sure if you did a google search for "how to look after a tortoise" it'd throw up more useful stuff than the folks on here... haha.

Re: Tortoises - red98 - 14-05-13

Re: Tortoises - bri h - 14-05-13

My daughter got one for her boyfriend george (thats the name of the tortoise). I had to make a box thing with heat lamps and stuff. They dont hibernate till there about 5 years old and im realy embarrased that i know this shit.

Re: Tortoises - PlasticHarry - 14-05-13

We have one.

If you want it to live longer than you they take quite a bit of care - especially diet. No, you can't just feed them cucumber (or a lot of other stuff which has traditionally been fed to them).

I have a tortoise. King Thomas is now over 100, and lives permanently outside (This is not something I recommend!)

My tortoise loves cucumber, strawberries, lettuce, raspberries, all sorts! I've him for 32 years and he's a big spur thigh Smile

My missus has one. Its a right pain in the rs! We have to tape a key locator on his back when he's out in the garden, or we end up searching for him all night.

ready made meat pies!

Re: Tortoises - Tori - 14-05-13

Steve, build him a run! Problem solved Smile

My tortoise is in the garden all year round, he digs himself under the shed when he hibernates, and wanders around the garden as he pleases. He could dig out if he wanted, but I think he likes where he is Smile

Re: Tortoises - taylor - 14-05-13

Re: Tortoises - Tori - 14-05-13

Lol, in the early days of having mine, we put his name in nail varnish on his shell ;-) He knows who he is now, as do most of the neighbours Smile

Re: Tortoises - positron - 15-05-13

Wow, King Thomas is exactly the kind of tort I want to leave behind for my kids to keep when I turn to dust.. I am so jealous!

What's wrong with keeping a tort outdoors I wonder, are there no natural torts in this part of the world? I saw a few a few months ago at a pond in Phoenix park in Dublin. They seems to be doing fine.

Re: Tortoises - Tori - 15-05-13

It's too cold over here for any tortoise all year round. Except for King Thomas. He's special ;-)

This is Larry, I would love one of these, he's an aldabra giant tortoise, and he is MASSIVE!!

These might be better to locate your tortoise than the great big keyfinder.
