Best bet with any strange noises like this is trying to see if you can record it for us and stick it up on YouTube or something

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - neilavo62 - 09-05-13

Big Grin  yes red 98 i have one of those. :lol :lol
but sadly its not the problem yet.
it seems to be coming from the front sprocket area. i,m having trouble loading a video of it.

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - neilavo62 - 09-05-13

the chain and sprockets seem fine and it has a scottoiler.????
could they make this noise..

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - red98 - 09-05-13

if its making the noise on the stand its not the chain and sprocket.....clutch ?

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - tosh23 - 09-05-13

the gearbox has "square" teeth or something like that, thats why it whines...Double check you chain tension (45 to 55mm) Go for 55mm for quietness...and make absolute sure of the wheel alignment.. What mileage ?? Are you running an oem front sprocket or an aftermarket one ?

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - neilavo62 - 09-05-13

i dont which chain and sprocket as they were on the bike when i got.
there looks very little wear.i had a new tyre last month at the yam dealer,s fitted.
so its possible to be clutch noise. Sad ..chain tension is fine.
just dont want to waste money...

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - red98 - 09-05-13

just re-read your first post, noise still there when clutch is in,does it whine when in neutral ?

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - neilavo62 - 09-05-13

no red its quiet in neutral..when i,m riding and pull the clutch in at speed it still makes the same noise tho.
i,ll pop it into dealers tomorrow for a quote..

55mm ??
Most people aim for around 30-40mm.
55mm is too slack.

If the bike has a heavy duty chain on, they can make a whining/buzzing noise.
My new chain certainly does.

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - neilavo62 - 09-05-13

thanks darrsi i think you maybe right.i hope so.. Big Grin .i was gonna get a new chain and sprocket being not sure what to do.but i,ll leave it for now.the bike run,s fine and smooth. Wink Wink

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - Yamazer-92 - 09-05-13

Since changing my chain for a heavy duty x ring my bike makes a whine from the sprocket / left side of engine sometimes too usually in 6th gear at around 50-60mph. I thought it might be because I didn't put a gasket back in when I replaced it and it could be vibration of the front sprocket cover and engine, but I have left it because it sounds cool like a supercharger and to my knowledge is doing no harm  Big Grin  (Done 2k miles on chain, still looks like new as does the front sprocket and nut).

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - darrsi - 10-05-13

I think the noise is simply the weight of the chain rubbing on the plastic chain guide!

yeh,i thinking that as well.....first think to check,as DARRSI  has already stated, 40 mm slack  Smile  and check alignment  Wink

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - darrsi - 10-05-13

My new chain makes a right old noise, but it's not a bad noise at all, and i'd imagine that if the rear wheel is offset by even a fractional amount compared to how it was previously then the chain will rub and cut a new path, even more so if it's your first ever heavy duty chain.
The noise will slowly subside over time, and keeping it well lubed will also help.

Re: help needed with whining noise!!!! - neilavo62 - 10-05-13

thanks everybody.
i,m sure your right.i didn,t get to ride it much last year.
keep it well lube,d  :lol :lol .
