Direction of fuel float - reillypadraig - 25-04-13

Silly question, is the float ment to be facing the front or the back of the tank? Fuel showing full all the time even if its almost empty

Fuel float?

Can you us a bit more...........

Re: Direction of fuel float - Dead Eye - 25-04-13

I'm assuming he means the float that is inside the fuel tank to measure its current capacity

If its constantly showing full then I'd say make it face the other way? Sorry its not very helpful but I don't know which way it is usually...

Ah got you the sender unit  Smile  it should face to the back and as far as I know it will only fit that way unless you bend the arm, check all the connections/wiring and the fuse it's possible it's buggered not common that I have to say.

Wel it was facing the back and reading full, took the float out completely and connected it directly to the sensor, turned on ignition and lifter the arm up and down and the gauge was following correctly, very slowly but correct, but still showing full with only 2-3 liters in it, turned it around to face the front with about 8 liters in it and it showed just under quarter but when I left the bike sitting of 5 mins to warm up it showed full again, so I filled it, when for a half hour spin and when I came back it showed quarter tank for a few mins and then back to full, it's nuts, just wants to show full all the time, strange 1

When I did fill it with float facing forward I could hear the float banging on the inside of the top of the tank so it must be surposed to face the back?

Possibly but when I check it when it was out of the tank and plugged it back onto the bike it seemed to work????

How fast is the fuel needle surposed to rise and fall?

Re: Direction of fuel float - Dead Eye - 26-04-13

Not especially fast, takes a good 30-40 seconds for mine to read full (when the tank is full) after the bike has been off

Re: Direction of fuel float - red98 - 26-04-13

a nice smooth movement, not sticking  Wink

Re: Direction of fuel float - Revilo18 - 26-04-13

Does the warning light come on when it is v nearly empty- -even if the dial reads full? If so - then faulty sender unit sounds most likely. Gnasher says not common but I've heard from a number of people who've had problems with their fuel guages on Mk1 600s. Mine's a bit rubbish as well. When it's full the needle goes off the scale and I get loads of miles before it comes back on the scale again. Then once it's on the scale the fuel seems to disapear way quicker than I'd expect. Also - the needle seems to change too much one way or the other under heavy acceleration or braking.
