Re: Brands Hatch track day! - ghostbiker - 03-04-13

Had a couple of problems on the last track day, 1 was sorted after heading in to a fast right hander the valve stem sheared off a dumped me in the gravel LOL. That turned out to be the tyre pressure check cap was to heavy for the stem on track abuse.
But the 2nd I have not actually done anything about.
Twice I had brake fade, scary at the best of times.
I know why I got it. Basically I was not breaking hard enough so was on the brakes to long and over heated them. 2-3 easy corners later and they come back. Only happened twice on 7 sessions.
But is there a better pad or fluid I could try to help?  I'm not great on the brakes so its possible it will happen again, so anything I can do to reduce that risk would be good.
I will be trying to brake harder this time so I'm dragin it less and for shorter periods.

Can't remember what pads I have in, but think I went ebc. Fluid was fresh 6 months before the track day so now is maybe a fraction over a year old. So well within spec. But I'm willing to change fluid and pads if I'm sure its going to help.

Ideas and views?

You could try switching to organic front pads, they wear out quicker but they aren't as prone to brake fade - if you did get fade twice on your last track day its quite likely you may need to replace the brake fluid anyway as its possible it may have overheated it and it wont resist overheating next time as well.

Re: Brands Hatch track day! - AyJay - 05-04-13

I've used genuine OEM pads for years ever since a set of EBCs chewed through my VFR's discs in 2500 miles and my discs are still fine at 102,000 miles. Beware aftermarket pads is all I can say. Some will be fine, some won't.

Anyway, warning over. On track, brakes get more of a beating than any other component so need to be in perfect condition otherwise they will fade. That means get them off the bike and clean them until they are absolutely spotless front and back (dirt and old pad dust stops them from shedding heat. It insulates them) Make very sure the recesses for the seals are utterly spotless too. A soft brass wire brush on a Dremel is very useful, I find.

Then make sure the seals are in perfect condition, rebuild with red rubber grease only (comes with a new set of seals these days) and finally, use new brake fluid. ie buy a new can. DOT 4 is fine in my experience.
Do that and even prolonged braking should be no problem.

Re: Brands Hatch track day! - ghostbiker - 05-04-13

Had a chat with my local shop today about it. He is pretty sure the pads are not the problem but the fluid. (though the "problem" as such was my use to be fair)
So prob going to change the fluid for 5.1 and clean the brakes.
5.1 is ment to have less oil and more technical stuff LOL  so a higher boiling point = less fade
Very good point about the brake dust acting as insulation not something I had considered though I do clean normally in the spring to get rid of the winter crap.

How do organic pads lower fade?

Re: Brands Hatch track day! - AyJay - 05-04-13

I'd be interested to hear about how you get on with the DOT 5.1. I tried it years ago but found that it used to go off (hygroscopically absorbing water) really quickly and I was told back then that it's best used on race bikes with braided hoses. Don't know if this is true or not but  ...

As for the orgasmic pads - lord knows. I mean what does that even mean? Are they made out of mung beans or something? I presume they have no metal content . .

Re: Brands Hatch track day! - ghostbiker - 06-04-13

Running hell braided lines anyway so hope that will help. I'm still not 100% sure about 5.1 might do a bit more reading on it.

As for organic pads I assume they are just made of a diff abrasive I hear they tend to be a bit softer a wear quicker but less wear to disc. But never looked in to it. Just didn't know how this helps fade.

Just forked out £200+ for new chain and sprox so don't want to go overboard if I can help it.
( high price as oe front sprox and didn't want a cheap/fake chain. Also inc fitting.)

Re: Brands Hatch track day! - JoeRock - 07-04-13

As above, 5.1 is better but absorbs water MUCH quicker, to be honest it's probably a waste of time on a road bike. Just get a very good Dot 4 with a high boiling point and you should be ok, flush the old shit through and keep going until you've only new in there, and you'll be good to go!

Re: Brands Hatch track day! - ghostbiker - 18-04-13

Cracking day as allways.
No brake fade but then the Indy circuit is no where near as harsh on brakes as the gp I did last time.
Clocked up 116 miles round brands and had to fill up at about 90 m as the light was on.
Got a few pics but hard to post them from the phone and I'm not home till Monday as I'm watching the truck racing at brands this weekend.

So here is the only pic on the phone right now, though a bunch more are on the photo bucket site it links to..... I think LOL[url=http://[/url]

Re: Brands Hatch track day! - JZS 600 - 23-04-13

Nice photos!

I did a recent track day(ish) at Brands, it was the Fire Bike day so we had 2 sessions on the Indy circuit.

I was running Ferodo organic pads on the front and didn't notice anything weird apart from when I went into Paddock a bit quick but it was fine, the track was drying out a bit by then  :eek

I'm not a late braker anyway
