BUTCHERED EXUP VALVE. - andy m - 23-03-13
Hi all.Purchased gen 1 fazer1000 54 plate about 6 months ago with under 8000 miles.I read the topic about stuck exup valves,so I decided to have a check on mine.The previous owner had tried to free the valve( because it was siezed in the housing)by clamping the housing in a vice and swinging on the valve with a pair of stilsons.Realising it was proper siezed and no mechanical know how, it now resembled a boomerang,he forced the end back into the bush in the exhaust section and then hammered the housing over to re-align the three holes on the housing.I found this out after undoing the three bolts, and the housing spun away from the holes.I ran this for a few months not knowing, (after buying it and no number 7 rev counter fault),and it ran okay.Can I blank the valve off or is it a new valve and housing or secondhand pipes.Will an early r1 fit.He got away with the fault code by disconnecting the cables.HELP.

Sounds like it's been well and truly butchered.
They do go better with the valve in and working. If it's just just the valve you'll need to get another. If the collector box has been hammered to buggery then I think new downpipes are in order.
Prety sure R1 pipes don't fit.

HI MATEY,THE PIPES ARE OKAY,IT IS THE VALVE AND THE HOUSING THAT ARE TWISTED,WHEN YOU UNDO THE BOLTS,THE HOUSING SPINS SLIGHTLY CLOCKWISE DUE TO THE VALVE BEING TWISTED.CHEERS FOR THE R1 INFO.

Hi Andy. I bought a spare set of downpipes and the end plate was slightly twisted, but if you're gentle, you can bend them back if you've got a vice. Depends on how bent yours are, of course, but I'd give it a go.

Early R1 pipes wont fit, but an early R1 exup valve will.
See if you can get an engineering firm to straighten the valve - its the (very) expensive part. The housing cover isnt quite as eye-watering £££
My valve was warped slightly & an engineering firm machined to fit again, its a bit loose & makes occasional squeaking noises but works again.

There was some downpipes for sale on ebay just the other day, don't know if they had the valve still fitted but might be worth a search?

You need 98 - 2000 R1 EXUP parts to fit a Fazer.
Sounds like this one has been royally rogered but it's amazing how many can be brought back from the scrap heap. However, if you're not mechanically inclined, go with kebab's advice to have an engineering firm do the job. You might have to take them the downpipes, too, so that they can check alignment/rotation as they proceed with the work.

CHEERS TO ALL FOR THE ADVICE,I AM GOING TO TRY A LOCAL ENGINEERING GUY WHO IS A BIKER HIMSELF.I AM FAIRLY MECHANICALLY MINDED,BUT THIS HAS BEAT ME.THE VALVE IS FREE IN THE HOUSING PLATE OFF THE BIKE,BUT WON'T LINE UP WHEN FITTING WITH THE HOLE AT THE BACK OF THE DOWNPIPE WITHOUT BENDING IT OVER,IT THEN IT GOES TIGHT.

If you need a new valve, check ebay.com (not co.uk). Mine wasn't buggered, it just wasn't there. I managed to get a complete Exup assembly from ebay.com (America) for £58 all in.
