FZS600 ECU Problems? - bobw078 - 22-03-13

Hi,

Has anyone had an issue with the ECU on a 03 FZS600?

Bike will start and run no problem 90% of the time, sometimes it will turn, turn, turn and then eventually fire up.

There is obviously an intermittent problem but has anyone else had this ECU issue with a Fazer?

Ive had it checked over and wiring / coils / battery / charging all seam to be ok.

Losing confidence in the bike which is a shame as this is my second fazer and not ready to change yet.

Thanks
Robert

Have you been told that its an ecu prob or just a gues? Could be something simple( hopefully)

Do they have an ecu on an 03 plate,i thought it was the injection models with the ecu?

Re: FZS600 ECU Problems? - bobw078 - 22-03-13

Some call it CDI unit.

I think it sends signal to coils for sparking - maybe does more.......I could be wrong altogether.

Not been told it is faulty but basically been told everything else is looking ok.

Was more wondering if anyone has had the unit fail intermittently.

If I unplug the "ECU" then the bike tries to turn over - same symptom as when it will sometimes not start.

Do you get decent sparks?
If the bike runs OK once you've got it started it would point to the CDI unit being OK and the problem is likely to be mixture.
Has choke operation been checked?

Starter unit itself may need a looking at, much mileage on the bike?

Next time it turns over but won't start, wiggle the key on/off a few times and try again.

I had problems where it'd crank and crank but not fire, then randomly just start perfectly - after I'd taken the key out to get the seat off as I later worked out.  Cleaned the ignition barrel and it's been fine since.

The Beast had a very similar issue last back end... turned out the spark plugs where knackered!!  :rolleyes

I've never heard of an ECU failing on these models without first an owner doing something to them i.e. jet washing! If these fail the bike will not run or run very badly.

Fazers can be tricky to start when cold and using the choke, it requires a bit of a juggling act little bit of choke and throttle then a bit more choke once started to get it idling at about 2k.  Try a bit of juggling if that doesn't work then check out the air filter, plugs and carb settings.

I have never heard of an ECU/CDI (generally called the Ignitor by Yamaha) failure on a fazer, but intermittand could be down to the ignition or a damaged wire.
There was a foccer on here some time ago with a similiar problem and it turned out to be a damaged wire under the seat going to the ECU/CD1 unit under the tail piece

as already said.....very unusual for ecu to fail,go back and check the basics again  Wink

Another "unlikely to be ECU / CDI fault" opinion - in any case, I don't see why it would cause an intermittent problem (unless you've got loose wiring / plugs / sockets); IMO the ECU would either work fully, or fail fully.

Who checked the bike over? (ie, could they have a vested interest in selling you a new control unit?).
