indicator flashing fast - popeye72 - 11-03-13

ok gurus, i have flush fit front indicators, fitted when i bought the bike. front right bulb blew and i couldnt find a direct replacement, its a 12v 23/8w it has staggerd baynets and they are not 180 degrees apart, if that makes sense. i cant find them anywhere i fitted a small 12v 10w orange indicator bulb that works for about 3 flashes then both front and back flash fast??? if i put hazards on they all flash normal, left hand indcators flash ok, when i moved the lamp to the other side it happened there so definatly the bulb. i know its the bulb but cannot find one??? :o

Re: indicator flashing fast - ChristoT - 11-03-13

I agree, it sounds like your bulb. My indicators have a dodgy connection, so the fast flash tells me when an indicator is out.

Below is my theory (could be wrong, probably am)

The reason they flash faster is due to load on the relay. When you have the hazards on, there's enough load to keep the flash at the right speed. When indicating right, the 2 bulbs don't draw enough power to slow the flash down, which is why it flashes twice as fast. Might it be an idea to change the fitting to a more conventional size?

Re: indicator flashing fast - popeye72 - 11-03-13

I do appreciate the help guys but I can get them on eBay but cheaper to get new indicators ?

Re: indicator flashing fast - darrsi - 11-03-13

I thought the whole idea of this post was that you couldn't find them???

Re: indicator flashing fast - popeye72 - 11-03-13

Sorry just found on eBay tonight they are £12 with £9 pound postage from the states apparently they are American god knows who fitted them but I think ghost bikers sell the indicators will try and call them tomorrow to see if they sell the bulbs

Re: indicator flashing fast - Foxwood - 12-03-13

Maybe a digital relay could work? I have aftermarket LED indicators with said relay. Without the upgraded relay the indicators were giving pedestrians seizures.

Re: indicator flashing fast - unfazed - 12-03-13

They are definitely American indicators. You will always tell the American imports because the Indicators are on the low 8w filements all the time and when you switch on the Indicators the 23w filement lights up.
They are the same fitment as the Stop and Tail light bulb which are 21w/5w.
Change them all to 21w/5w and get "clear orange paint" from a model shop and paint them. Works fine and when the paint starts to wears off paint them again.

Re: indicator flashing fast - Will.I.Is - 13-03-13

I have LED indicators on mine and all I did to solve the fast flash was to fit a new relay from germany. This one to be precise http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-flasher-relay-Yamaha-Fazer-FZS-600-1000-FZ1-FZ6-S2-/360294077240?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item53e3335338

Straight fit, no need to bugger about with the connections or inline resistors Smile

Re: indicator flashing fast - popeye72 - 13-03-13

cheers guys it will cost me £9.99 to replace the indicators in total so will probably do that then i can get proper bulbs

Re: indicator flashing fast - Fazbaz - 15-03-13

Why not just fit a couple of resistors, there must be lots of them kicking around as anyone who's fitted LED flashers must have used them ?
