What is my annoying noise??? Any ideas? - roadpilot3 - 03-03-13

Morning everybody – more advice needed by fellow Foccer!
My bike has developed a noise which kicks in at about 4500rpm and disappears  at about 6000rpm.  The noise is a buzzing type noise, like a vibration.  It seems to be coming from the engine somewhere but cant work out where exactly.  It does it in neutral, in gear with the clutch in and while under power.
Initially I though it was the key vibrating on the handle bar to give you an idea of the noise.  As for the volume, I can hear it while I’m riding if I listen out for it or when at a standstill it is quite prominent.
Bike isn’t riding any different, doesn’t miss a beat, pulls like a train in every gear inc through the noisy rpm range.  No smoke, loss of power or misfire. It’s been doing it about a week or  10 days.
The bike is a 2001 FZS600 which has done a mere 58000 miles.  It has recently been serviced, had the valve clearances and the carbs balanced.  Not sure if that’s relevant.....
Any ideas gratefully received as its going to get taken to bits today to try to diagnose and would be handy to have some bits to check.
Thanks

It'll be the plastics in the fairing i reckon. The engine does have vibes at that rev range and both fzs600's that I've had have developed a buzz from the fairing. If it is that area, likely to be headlight cowl thingy, plastic clippings come loose or those plastic panels that clip onto the inside of the fairing.

I know you said it's coming from the engine area but make sure that you're sure about that first. Diagnosing random noises is never an easy thing!

Actually GP Hero – you were close!
After extensive poking, prodding and general pressing on things it was the LEDS rattling in my aftermarket indicators !!!!  I will cure it when I get a chance but its a relief to know it isn’t as serious as it sounds!
I checked the sprocket nut first as I thought it must be that but to my surprise it was still there!
The only thing I’m not going to tell you is how long it took me to work that out!!!  :lol

Could be placebo, but I felt that after carb sleaning, balancing (at the same time I changed cam chain, but don't think cam chain had anything to do with it) does help. The vibrations gap was beggining to become wider (from 5000 to 7000), now it's narrow and lower again (5500 to 6000). I'll give it more try in a few weeks (when winter ceases) and see how it feels.
